Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Chair of The Department of Anatomical Sciences, the successful candidate will provide instruction in one or more of the preclinical courses, including but not limited to, embryology, histology, gross anatomy, and neuroanatomy, as it applies to the discipline of classical and clinical anatomy. In the area of Gross Anatomy, the candidate will compile and effectively integrate into the teaching curriculum current and relevant clinical cases and examples of medical imaging that directly support the delivery of clinical anatomy instruction. The candidate will also directly and continuously participate in the management of the dissection laboratory facility including effective interaction with the Laboratory Manager in all areas of anatomy curriculum requiring laboratory functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Preclinical Sciences (Anatomy) must:

  • Assist WCUCOM and WCU in the implementation of their respective Mission Statements, Statement(s) of Purpose, Institutional Plan(s), and Financial Plan(s)
  • Complete assigned tasks and participate in assigned work groups for preparing accreditation documents for all accrediting bodies;
  • Work with Course Directors, and Associate Deans to integrate and implement WCUCOM courses into a four-year, seamless curriculum using on-site, distance learning, and other standard and emerging technologies;
  • Review relevant WCUCOM curriculum in its entirety and recommend pertinent suggestions to the Course Director(s) and Associate Dean, Preclinical Sciences;
  • Assist in monitoring the progress of all students on assuring progress toward graduation and recommend disciplinary action when necessary;
  • Teach in courses as assigned by the Chairman of the Department of Anatomical Sciences;
  • Support anatomical imaging instruction;
  • Serve on WCUCOM committees, as assigned
  • Assist in the selection of students to attend WCUCOM;
  • Assist in student remediation as necessary, and as recommended by the Promotion and Matriculation Committee;
  • Assist in the interview process for prospective incoming faculty;
  • Make contributions to the advancement of knowledge and the development of osteopathic medicine through scientific research and community service;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of Anatomical Sciences, and WCUCOM Dean.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to spend 60% of regularly-assigned hours in teaching (lecturing and laboratory)
  • Must possess the mobility to work in a standard office setting
  • Must have the vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone
  • Must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Must have the ability to lift and carry 25 pounds
  • Must have the ability to travel throughout Mississippi and the Gulf South region.

Required Qualifications

  • Have a terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD), or equivalent
  • Have academic experience in anatomical sciences; i.e., Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology and Neuroanatomy
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Be detail oriented and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Have expertise with Microsoft Office Suite products and the desire and ability to learn course management software/distance learning technologies
  • Be able to complete multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in teaching and research in a COCA-accredited osteopathic medical school or college
  • Experience in more than one preclinical (biomedical/preclinical/basic science) discipline
  • Experience in interaction and potential collaboration with similar faculty in other schools
  • Experience in the application of computers and radiological software applications to medical imaging in teaching and research
  • Experience in the data modeling of educational processes directly related to the teaching and educational research of basic and clinical anatomy
  • Experience in the application of computers and database application software to the design, development, testing and implementation of relational and/or graph database applications implementing the data models mentioned above
  • Experience in anatomy course development and curriculum integration
  • Experience in collaboratively developing courses between related disciplines having an anatomical component such as Anatomy and Osteopathic Principles and Practice, Clinical Skills, Doctoring Skills
  • Experience in the design and application of augmented/virtual reality hardware/software configurations as direct augmentation to the anatomy curricula or related curricula
  • Experience in the design and delivery of online teaching methods directly supporting the anatomy curriculum. These methods may include curricular tools such as CANVAS, BLACKBOARD, or D2L.
  • Experience in the application of video teleconferencing to anatomical education for distance education applications
  • Desire to explore future anatomical educational technologies, methods and courses requiring anatomical knowledge, including those using telemedicine/drone capabilities
  • History of grant-funded research
