Summary

The Boiler Operator/Refrigeration Repairman II is responsible to maintain, repair, rebuild and adjust plant refrigeration, boiler, water, and compressed air systems in areas of responsibility by analyzing, calibrating, replacing, repairing, or rebuilding all equipment and machinery within established guidelines. Employee will learn to use and operate industrial shop equipment and machinery.

Education, Licensure and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and completion of a formal trades training program, or an equivalent number of years of education and maintenance experience.
  • GCAP Operator II or equivalent
  • Must complete in-house training in order to be an independent operator within 6 months
  • CIRO Certification (Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator).
  • PSM/RMP for ammonia refrigeration.
  • (RAGAGEP) Good Engineering Practices.
  • Five-year minimum operator experience for refrigeration and steam boilers
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA Process Safety Management requirements.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform Lock Out Tag Out, Hot Work, and Confined Space procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

(Please note: This in no way states or implies that these are the only duties you will be required to perform. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate.):

  1. Start-up, shut down, adjust, repair plant refrigeration and boiler equipment to operate at established plant performance standards. 
  2. Read, interpret, understand manufacturers’ equipment manuals, equipment operating procedures. 
  3. Complete work orders and follow safety procedures
  4. Maintain daily engine and boiler rooms log sheets.
  5. Ability to wear company required Personal Protective Equipment, to include but not limited to hard hat, safety shoes, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, air purifying respirator, self-contained breathing apparatus, and level A chemical suit as part of the Emergency Response Team. 
  6. Must be able to pass a lung function test to be certified to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus or gas mask, which requires no facial hair in areas where the face mask seals against the face.
  7. Required to be clean shaven if trained in the use of and required to use a respirator.
  8. Ability to be respiratory trained.
  9.  Ability to be HAZMAT trained and a member of the HAZMAT team.
  10. Ability to be lockout/tagout, PIT and confined space certified.
  11. Work as a team to plan and conduct equipment repairs.
  12. Conduct routine audits and equipment inspections.
  13. Demonstrate troubleshooting abilities.
  14. Respond to unplanned/emergency work requests in a timely and effective manner. 
  15. Follow good manufacturing practices. 
  16. Complete the following courses and certifications
    1. Refrigeration Operator II Class or Equivalent
    2. Certified Industrial Ammonia Operator
    3. Boiler Operator II Class or Equivalent
    4. PSM/RMP Class for Ammonia Operators
    5. RAGAGEP (Good Engineering Practices) Certification
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Language Skills

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the language of the majority cultural group in order to communicate effectively. Must be able to hear enough to understand those individuals as well. Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend documents such as grafts/flow sheets, financials, general professional articles and publications, governmental regulations, safety rules, assignment sheets, and procedure manuals. Must be able to write reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures, and other administrative forms as outlined above.

Must be able to effectively communicate in both individual and group settings. Must be able to present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups.

Mathematical Skills

In order to perform duties, must be able to:

  1. Add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates, ratios all units of measure such as whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
  2. Make, read and interpret graphs, rates, ratios, and percentages.
