This boutique immigration law firm is seeking a highly motivated professional to manage finance/accounting, human resource and operations functions. This newly created position will serve as a key member of the growing Senior Leadership team, working closely with cross-functional peers and the Owner/CEO to collaborate on accounting functions, managing the internal HR function and actively participating in the operations and strategic growth of the business. The Controller will lead the accounting/finance function, reporting and controls, creating and helping to ensure that policies/procedures/accurate JD’s are a resource for all employees, while also ensuring that the CEO and key functional leaders are provided with accurate, timely and relevant financial/human resource/operational data that is critical to effectively run the business, while making key decisions related to the growth of the firm.

The Controller in conjunction with the other members of the leadership team will work proactively to grow and scale the firm. This role also has the opportunity to grow and expand, as the firm grows, through your contribution in utilizing your proven experience for the advancement of firm goals and the Owner’s diverse initiatives.

Some of What You Will Do

  • Responsible for all aspects of accounting; cash management, general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, monthly financial reporting, budgeting, collections, etc.
  • Manage and implement financial systems, including production of financial statements and reports for the firm’s owner/CEO.
  • Improves & sustains processes that ensure cases are prepared accurately and efficiently, meeting internal & external deadlines. Performs audits on legal teams to ensure policies are being followed and operating as intended.
  • Management and oversight of weekly client invoicing and collections, in coordination with the firms Client Relations department.
  • Track monthly cash flow needs and performance, reporting to Owner/CEO.
  • Oversee and ensure firm Operations are in accordance with firm policies, growth initiatives and the team feels supported with tools/guidance needed to be successful.
  • Maintain and improve human resources policies, programs, and practices.
  • Manage the recruitment and selection process for new team members.
  • Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances, or other issues.
  • Maintain the payroll system using RUN Powered by ADP and implement employee benefits program.
  • Evaluate, implement, and support the effectiveness of internal financial controls for the law firm and other businesses in CEO’s portfolio.
  • Manage and reconcile IOLTA trust account monthly for the firm and general operating accounts for the firm and other businesses.
  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports; provide ongoing financial advice and input on strategic initiatives for the law firm and other businesses.
  • Complete and present quarterly and annual financial reporting and analysis for the firm and other businesses including research on industry trends and recommendations.
  • Prepare personal property tax return and other government report filings for businesses and coordinate with CPA to prepare tax filings.
  • Apply quantitative methods to drive and support management decisions.
  • Work closely with the management team to help execute the vision and strategy for the organization by developing, reporting, and tracking key metrics and developing presentations to convey progress toward company initiatives for both the Accounting HR department.
  • Obtain and manage business insurance needs (Cybersecurity, Professional Liability Insurance, General Liability, etc.).
  • Define, benchmark and implement operational best practices for the accounting/human resources department.
  • Work directly with the firm’s leadership to make organizational decisions related to the company’s financial/human capital growth and profitability.
  • Maintain strong relationships with banks, vendors and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies as well as all local, state, federal and
  • international laws regarding finances/accounting and human resources requirements, required filings and reporting.
  • Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data.
  • Oversight and ensuring proper performance of payroll and cash management.
  • Analyze new business initiatives to assess the ROI and funding requirements.
  • Communicate, model, and monitor conformance to company ethical standards of conduct.
  • Manage and coordinate the year-end audit.
  • Develop recommendations for improving business performance and profitability.

  • Excellent customer service acumen and willing to go the extra mile to ensure exceptional customer service is provided.
  • Proven and able to demonstrate consistent work ethic.

What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with increasing responsibility in Accounting/Finance and Human Resources.
  • Thorough and proven understanding of Accounting, including Income Statement and Balance Sheet reporting.
  • Experience working in mid-sized to large company with proven track record of growth.
  • Computer literate with accounting software as well as programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Preferred experience within a law firm or professional services
  • Bachelor’s degree and a CPA, or CMA, preferred.
