Responsibilities

  • Roadway Design: Lead and execute the design of roadway projects, ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards and regulations. This involves conceptualization, detailed design, and preparation of construction plans.
  • Client Interaction: Act as the primary point of contact for the NCDOT, managing client relationships and understanding their specific project requirements. Collaborate closely with NCDOT representatives to ensure alignment with their expectations and standards.
  • Project Management: Oversee the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to completion. Develop project schedules, manage budgets, and ensure that projects are delivered on time and within scope. Provide regular updates to clients and stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and Supervision: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff members, fostering their professional development. Supervise and review the work of other engineers, ensuring quality and adherence to project requirements.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain rigorous quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and completeness of design deliverables. Conduct reviews of design work and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of changes in regulatory requirements and standards, ensuring that all designs and projects are in compliance with relevant codes and regulations. Address any issues related to permitting and approvals.
  • Technical Leadership: Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in roadway design. Provide technical leadership by introducing innovative solutions and applying the latest design methodologies.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Foster a collaborative work environment by coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including surveyors, environmental specialists, and other engineers. Ensure seamless integration of various project components and disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college preferred.
  • North Carolina Professional Engineer license (PE) or the ability to obtain North Carolina Licensing within 6 months of employment
  • Proficiency with roadway design programs such as MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenRoads ConceptStation, etc.
  • Familiarity with NCDOT plan preparation criteria and design standards.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and with large multi-discipline engineering teams is important.
  • Affiliations with professional societies and industry and community involvement are desirable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for prolonged periods, use hands/fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms, speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
