Associate Producer, National Affairs
Exempt, Full-time
Reports to: Senior Producer and National Affairs Editor
JOB OBJECTIVE
The Associate Producer, National Affairs PBS NewsHour’s National Affairs unit, responsible for assisting with studio and field production, setting up stories, and assisting the beat with other requests as necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Find guests, conducts pre-interviews and book nightly news studio segment guests, often daily.
  • Conduct research and preparation for correspondents for stories and interviews.
  • Locate and coordinate production elements, video, sound and images for deadline.
  • Assist with tape production by researching stories and how to tell stories in the field.
  • Script and produce short tape packages.
  • Help set up and coordinate shoots in the field for video packages.
SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Some expertise, knowledge and prior reporting experience around a variety of topic areas impacting national affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage fresh, compelling news and feature content for broadcast and/or online.
  • Superior writing skills, under deadline pressure, for both short turn-around news items and longer-term feature content.
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues in a collaborative manner under deadline.
  • Some experience using nonlinear editing software including Premiere, AVID or Final Cut.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in journalism, preferably for a national outlet.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LOCATION
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
