General Description: The substitute teacher demonstrates a spiritual walk with Jesus Christ to the praise and glory of God. The substitute teacher shall maintain the classroom atmosphere of orderliness and respect exhibiting professionalism and maturity through the unknowns of daily classroom routines and subject content.

Substitute positions are variable hour and part time.

Observable Actions: He/She shall exhibit integrity as a Christian leader striving for continuous improvement in the job requirements and exhibiting all related skills in the areas below.

Spiritual:

• Model a daily walk with Jesus Christ in attitude, speech and actions
• Show by example the importance of Biblical knowledge and study, prayer, witnessing, and unity in Christian fellowship
• Follow the Matthew 18 principle in dealing with students, parents, administration, and staff
• Demonstrate brotherly love within the Body of Christ for students, parents, and staff

Responsibilities:

• To fulfill the duties of substitute teacher at Westminster Christian Academy, one should:
• Arrive promptly at 7:25 a.m.
• Cover the teacher’s assigned duty at 7:30 a.m. and 2:50 p.m., when applicable
• Read, in advance, all teacher notes, particularly those about special student needs
• Establish authority with the students immediately. Do this by going over the class rules and your expectations. (Use the classroom rules)
• Do not let students control the environment. Ask specific questions (when there is uncertainty on your part) identifying specific students to answer, not the entire group
• Take attendance
• Have students show respect, participate, and stand for Scripture, prayer, and pledge
• Follow the Substitute Template for the day, following the script
• Ask for assistance from the principal if materials and directives are not in evidence for the substitute to execute a lesson. (Send a note with a students asking for assistance)
• Follow class schedules and times on task, as provided
• Replace teacher materials in drawers or shelves provided
• Maintain classroom cleanliness and safety
• Provide proper supervision at all times, insuring the health and safety of students
• Display appropriate love and justice for all students
• Keep all students on task, making no allowance for foolishness, and holding students accountable for their choices
• Finish the day, checking off all teacher-expected work
• Give feedback to the teacher by making notes of things that were important: discipline matters, student concerns, and incomplete work for any subject, etc.
• Ask for help when needed

Requirements

The substitute teacher shall be one who has received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. In addition, the following are critical to success in the job.

• College degree is preferable.

• When possible, 10-20 hours of class observation at WCA, gaining insight into wisdom based discipline principles and school expectations

• When possible, attend new teacher in-service training in August

• Willingness to serve

• Experience in the field of education or substitute teaching
