Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay is Hiring a Bereavement & Volunteer Coordinator Near Virginia, VA

Job Description

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all volunteer and bereavement program activities for the hospice program. Work as a member of the hospice team in providing hospice care. Responsible for implementing and supervising the volunteer and bereavement program for the delivery of related services.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain volunteer training and orientation program.
  2. Recruit, educate and select volunteers.
  3. Establish a need for volunteer services with the patient and family/caregiver and the entire hospice team.
  4. Supervise and evaluate volunteers in a timely and appropriate manner.
  5. Maintains monthly statistics.
  6. Maintains current personnel files for volunteers.
  7. Reevaluate the volunteer and bereavement programs as necessary.
  8. Coordinator support/education meetings.
  9. Attends interdisciplinary group meetings.
  10. Provides information to individuals and community groups about hospice volunteer and bereavement services.
  11. Participates as needed in the budget preparation for program development.
  12. Actively participates in quality assessment performance improvement teams and activities.
  13. Accepts and performs other related duties and responsibilities.
  14. Design materials for distribution to families of eligible for and/or receiving Hospice bereavement services. 
  15. Plan and implement bereavement group events.
  16. Oversee bereavement follow-up by patient care staff and volunteers. 
  17. Conduct the bereavement section of the IDG.
  18. Maintains bereavement and volunteer resources libraries for the community and staff.
  19. Oversee the bereavement services program utilizing professional staff and volunteers.
  20. Coordinates and oversees all bereavement mailings.

Requirements/Qualifications

Must be able to work independently, make judgments based on assessments and data available, and act accordingly. Must be flexible, innovative, and possess good interpersonal skills. Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress and demonstrate emotional stability. 

  1. Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English.
  2. Basic computer skills
  3. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Must be able to meet deadlines, work under limited supervision.
  5. Ability to supervise, coordinate, and evaluation, bereavement and volunteer services.
  6. Understand hospice philosophy.
  7. Ability to organize and develop volunteer hospice personnel for both patient and organizational needs.
  8. Ability to manage a group of individuals providing volunteer time who will be considered employees.
  9. Valid state driver’s license.
  10. Motor Vehicle driving record satisfactory to the agency and its insurance providers.
  11. Proof of motor vehicle insurance. 

Education, training, and experience

  1. College degree in health or human services-related field.
  2. Minimum of two years experience in a related field preferred. 
  3. Experience or education in grief or loss counseling.
