Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is Hiring a Director/Assistant Director of Student Life Near Pittsburgh, PA

This position is a full-time Exempt 204-day position (40 hours per week)

This role reports to TBD and is integral to the academic leadership team. The position

provides strategic and operational oversight for the direction, development, and implementation

of programming and services that support student well-being and development such as Housing, Nursing, Transportation, and Residential Life, Campus and Athletic Activities and Transportation, After-School Programs, and other initiatives as assigned by the Superintendent. The role is accountable for multiple campus and community-based resources and development across the Programs of the Western

Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and many community programs and projects. The position partners closely with other student and academic affairs leaders to ensure robust and aligned networks of support that positively impact students.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A focus on holistic student well-being and development (academic, social, physical, and emotional)
  • Experience building and leading a comprehensive structure to support

Residential Life, Campus Life, and Health and Wellness.

  • An intentional focus - including programming and assessment experience - on student

belonging and engagement on a residential campus.

  • A deep, authentic, and personal concern for and engagement with students.
  • Coordination and oversight of Residential, Transportation, Recreation, and Athletic programs and employees within the residential and athletic programs.
  • Ensure optimal utilization of financial resources, effective operations, and technological

platforms.

  • Communicates with families about their children’s progress toward living independently. Sends home reports twice per school year and maintains these records.

Residence Life

  • Must possess the capacity to utilize data and assessments to inform long-range strategic

planning and budget forecasting for residence life & housing.

  • Serves as a critical member of the leadership team, who serves as a

visible, present, and approachable leader of the residential and after-school programs, providing oversight for day-to-day operations of residence life.

  • Develops procedures and policies in conjunction with the Superintendent and the Executive Director that facilitate seamless operations which align with state and local rules and expectations.
  • Ensure the implementation of crisis management protocols and procedures and lead

department responses to high-level crises impacting student health and safety.

Campus Life

  • Provides leadership and support for programs including major campus events,

evening programming, and regular weekly programs.

  • Develops after school programming that aligns with current trends and student interests.
  • Direct Summer Camp and event registration logistics and operations in

concert with appropriate school departments.

Athletics

  • Works closely with the athletic director to develop season schedules, coach selection criteria, and team selection criteria.
  • Develops the athletic department handbook for athletes, parents, and coaches. Reviews and adjusts as needed annually.
  • Is responsible to coordinating all aspects of on-campus tournaments including student and staff supervision, scheduling, housing, health care, and security.

After School Activities

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining a robust after-school program that serves both day and residential students.
  • Responsible for hiring and evaluation of after-school programming staff.

Student Health

  • Works closely with the health center to ensure nursing is provided for all off-campus events, trips, etc. where student’s require nursing services.
  • Coordinates sports physicals with the health center.
  • When hosting on-campus tournaments, works with the health center to provide nursing services to those students who require them.
  • Checks in with Health Center regularly to make sure needs are met with regards to staffing and health center requirements (medical forms, medication, needed supplies, etc.)
  • Serves as a liaison with academic administrators with the health center as needed.

All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the position required. Master’s degree strongly

Preferred. Intermediate ASL proficiency.

Minimum of five to seven years of recent and relevant experience

A comprehensive and strong experience with housing and residence life, athletic programs,

well-being, and development, programming that enable realization of the vision through

successful implementation.

Mental health and wellness experience

Deep collaboration skills, including the desire and ability to work with and coach a

committed team of colleagues.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
