Description

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Laboratory Processor works under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory and facilitates efficient specimen workflow in the laboratory by receiving samples in the lab from multiple sources; including but not limited to, the tube station, phlebotomy drop off, and clinics. Samples are logged into the computer system, ensuring all physician orders are fulfilled, medical necessity, and paperwork completed. Specimens are processed according to testing requirements, distributed throughout the laboratory or packaged and tracked for send-out testing. Additional duties include but are not limited to, scanning in reports, laboratory billing, answering the telephone and supporting the general functions of the laboratory. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Enter necessary information in the computer for patients who have orders for laboratory testing. 
• Obtain complete documentation for the laboratory orders, calling the doctor's office, if necessary, in order to obtain properly signed orders, medical necessity, ABNs and diagnosis codes.
• Works directly with the outpatient draw station and clinics to ensure all physician orders are met and samples are of sufficient quality for accurate patient testing. 
• Receive samples into the laboratory and process specimens prior to distribution for in-house testing. 
• Process and track reference lab send out testing. 
• Scan laboratory reports, fax or call results as needed and document actions in the computer.
• Answer incoming calls and directs them to the proper areas. 
• Interact positively and cooperatively with patients, visitors, physicians and employees.
• Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/Philosophy positively. 
• Maintain regular and predictable attendance. 
• Perform other essential duties as assigned. 

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent. 
• Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
• Excellent customer relation skills - Ability to communicate well under stressful conditions both on the telephone and in face-to-face encounters.
• Ability to maintain accurate records - good organizational skills.
• Able to concentrate and complete detailed work despite frequent interruptions.
• Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
• Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
• Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
• Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
• Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
• Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
• Be able to experience frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids and hazardous chemicals. 
• Be able to endure sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distractions and stress.
