The Honors College at West Virginia University invites applications for the position of Director for the Office of Undergraduate Research.

About the Opportunity

The position is responsible for leading the Office of Undergraduate Research in maintaining, developing, and growing undergraduate research-related programming and initiatives.

What you'll do:

  • Oversee the operation of the University's Office of Undergraduate Research (UGR) including managing staff, their professional development, and overseeing budget for the unit
  • Chair an Undergraduate Research Advisory Council. Serve on committees relevant to the University's research infrastructure
  • Work with faculty, students, and administrators to promote, facilitate, monitor, document, and/or evaluate undergraduate research across the university; maintain and update current inventory of undergraduate research on a regular basis; track students engaged in research to determine lasting influence of undergraduate research engagement; increase student engagement in undergraduate research with emphasis on traditionally underrepresented students; assess UGR programming and use assessment data to improve UGR programming
  • Create and maintain opportunities for experiential learning research internships
  • Collaborate with units on and off campus (e.g. career services, industry, corporate entities, educational institutions, and national organizations) to cultivate meaningful placements for students
  • Establish and/or assist with the coordination and planning of summer research program for undergraduate students;
  • Assist faculty member overseeing Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE); coordinate summer workshop series in conjunction with the SURE director and directors of other programs
  • Plan and oversee, when appropriate, campus-wide summer, fall, and spring undergraduate research events
  • Collaborate with state and national organizations in the dissemination of undergraduate research
  • Coordinate and promote efforts with other organizations/offices with interests related to undergraduate research
  • Work with UGR staff and University Relations or other media to develop suitable newsletter, media, publicity events, publications, and web content to publicize and promote undergraduate research efforts and achievements
  • Seek, apply, and secure grants to support undergraduate research activities in the university; collaborate with faculty and administration to seek internal and external funding to support undergraduate research
  • Engage with the Council for Undergraduate Research; attend and present at national and regional conferences; remain well-informed of national trends related to undergraduate research to inform undergraduate research programming at WVU
  • Direct and further develop the existing Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP), an academic-year, introductory undergraduate (UG) research experience. Ensure yearly continuation of RAP
  • Develop and maintain cooperate partnerships with offices and units across the WVU campus to ensure RAP program success
  • Establish and maintain relations with WU's Federal Work Study (FWS) Office to continue funding for RAP participants who are FWS eligible and for purposes of recruitment
  • Create/revise educational aspects of RAP (e.g., course curriculum)
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with units inside WVU, especially the Honors College, ASPIRE and Pre-Health Offices

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in field required
  • At least four (4) years of experience teaching/recruiting and/or advising/counseling students required.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in technical writing, professional or technical communication or editing and/or a position that included proposal/grant writing and/or appropriate undergraduate degree or emphasis area (e.g., English, Technical Writing, etc.) required.
  • Experience in proposal/grant writing, technical writing, professional or technical communication or editing required.
  • Strong familiarity of undergraduate research programming required.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong leadership/managerial skills.
  • Strong teaching skills.
  • Strong public speaking, networking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong mentoring and advising skills. -
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Individuals with background in STEM, STEM programming, and/or persistence in STEM education are encouraged to apply.
