    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant for this position must possess and/or show evidence of the following:
    • Hold a valid West Virginia Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology.
    • Licensed by West Virginia Board of Examiners for SLPS.
    • Demonstrate a strong academic background.
    • Exhibit a practical knowledge and understanding of speech and language development and communication disorders.
    • Show evidence and/or training in the areas of speech and language disorders.
    • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of speech and language and their relationship to educational performance, psychosocial development and/or vocational/career potential.
    • Demonstrate a general understanding of classroom curriculum.
    • Exhibit an understanding and proficiency related to a variety of speech and language diagnostic instruments.
    • Understand and interpret test data in order to improve the communication skills of students.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and/or skill in audiological evaluation and hearing aid monitoring procedures.
    • Exhibit knowledge and/or experience working with students who need speech and/or language training or remediation.
    • Demonstrate the ability to translate speech and language objectives into effective therapy sessions.
    • Exhibit proficiency in planning sessions designed to meet the individual needs of the students.
    • Demonstrate expertise in the use of a variety of therapeutic materials, techniques and equipment.
    • Exhibit knowledge of the different modalities of learning.
    • Demonstrate the ability to select teaching strategies that compliment individual learning styles.
    Speech-Language Pathologist
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: -Demonstrate an understanding of computer software and augmentative/alternative communication devices in working with communication disorders students.
    • Exhibit and understanding of principals needed to obtain positive student behavior.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to implement routine management techniques.
    • Demonstrate the ability to create a stimulating and motivating environment of students.
    • Demonstrate skill in writing and speaking.
    • Exhibit evidence of skills and/or experience in maintaining a cooperative working relationship with staff, students and public.
    • Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as a speech/language pathologist.
    • Any alterations to the aforementioned qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
    IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Supervisor of Pupil Services and Building Principal

    SELECTION: The position is filled by the Board of Education upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools

    EMPLOYMENT: supplement – 200 day employment term
    FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
    • Establish a therapy program within the assigned region.
    • Use an itinerant basis of scheduling when assigned to more than one school.
    • Carry out a screening program during the early week of school and at other times in an effort to locate those students who may be in need of speech and language services.
    • Perform diagnostic evaluations of speech and language skills of students screened and/or referred for such evaluations.
    • Select students to be enrolled in the therapy program and arrange a schedule which meets with approval of the speech therapist.
    • Conduct individual and group therapy.
    • Provide a master schedule, following program establishment, to the principals and teachers involved, to the liaison therapist and the superintendent of schools.
    • Plan a program of therapeutic services which meets the individual speech and language needs of the students enrolled in the therapy program.
    • Create an environment within the therapy room which promotes and encourages effective speech and language skills.
    • Evaluate on a regular basis, the on-going progress of the students enrolled in therapy.
    • Complete records evaluating the progress of each child through a daily log, and keep the parents informed of progress through letters, conferences and the speech progress reports sent home at the end of each semester.
    • Perform audiological evaluations of students enrolled in therapy and make referrals where necessary.
    • Provide for daily and weekly monitoring for students with hearing aids, as well as, assuring a yearly evaluation of the aide is completed by an audiologist.
    • Make referrals to other district specialist for further evaluations where necessary.
    • Prepare for therapy sessions by planning and developing materials which will enable the students to improve speech and language skills.
    • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administration regulation.
    • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and the time designated.
    • Attend staff meetings within the school when feasible. Attend monthly meetings of therapists which are held to insure uniformity of the program, to discuss difficulties encountered, offer solutions to problems and to plan for services provided.
    • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable rules of behavior and procedures. Maintain order in a fair and just manner during the therapy session.
    • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
    • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulation, and Board of Education policy.
    • Establish and maintain cooperation relations with others.
    • Make self available for conferences with parents and teachers discuss the student’s progress and make recommendations
    • Apply for Medicaid provider status. Follows established procedures, completes and maintains all appropriate Medicaid forms.
    • Provide for own professional growth through an on-going program of reading workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advances course work and institutions of higher learning.
    • Conduct one’s self in a positive professional manner at all times in order to enhance good public relations, foster loyalty, good ethics and cooperation with all personnel.
    • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the superintendent or immediate supervisor may, from time to time, assign.
