Description

Position Summary: As the Communications and Engagement Specialist, you will play a critical role in building positive connections within the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District and community. This position involves a blend of communication strategies, event planning, and creative storytelling to engage with our community. The role requires a regular presence in school buildings beyond a traditional office setting, including direct interaction with staff, students, and families.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Education, or a related field
  • Knowledge of Google Suite (Calendar, Docs, Slide Decks, Sheets, Forms), Website Design (Final SIte), Graphic Design (Canva), Communication Tools (Gmail, School Messenger, Smore), and Social Media tools (Buffer, Instagram, Facebook, X).
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter, and comfortable creating, developing, and working on multiple project plans/timelines concurrently.
  • Flexible, open-minded, and able to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and deadlines.
  • Creative and resourceful; able to work collaboratively with internal team, external colleagues, and community partners.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Able to use knowledge of digital tools and platforms to assist with communications, social media, graphic design, school and District websites
  • Ability to gather, interpret, organize, and write information for publishing
  • Responsible for accurately assisting with various internal/external communications (e.g., Press Releases, Articles, newsletters, flyers, bulletins, posters, etc.)
  • Manage the school-level media liaisons/newsletter information to support the production of internal/external communications
  • Assist in producing monthly District newsletter and city publications
  • Maintain District directories, school calendar, and organization chart
  • Use organization and communication skills to assist with various projects (e.g., surveys, flyers, handbooks, mailings, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of special events
  • Responsible for assisting with the production and coordination of weekly updates, press releases, articles, newsletters, and special projects as needed
  • Assists with print production of awards and certificates of recognition for board meetings, forms (create, design, produce, distribute, website), business cards (design, produce, distribute), signage (create, design, produce, distribute), letterhead (design, produce, distribute), district/school branding projects, mailings
  • Responsible for photography for press releases, pictures of school and district events/press releases for website, social media and communications
  • Responsible for the production of the school/district calendar
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to ten pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
  • Ability to reach in all directions and bend/stoop to store and retrieve files
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
