1.Health Care - Oversees the delivery of nursing care throughout the hospital to assure optimal patient comfort and safety.
a.Monitors the implementation of all organizational policies, primarily clinical practice standards by direct observation and interaction with the nursing staff.
b.Collaborates with the nursing staff and other health professionals in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
c.Provides administrative guidance for the procurement of procedural consents.
d.Delegation-Transfer the responsibility for the performance of patient care while retaining accountability for the outcome.
e.Patient Rights Protection-Protects the health care rights of a patient, especially a minor, incapacitated, or incompetent patient unable to make decisions.
f.Technology Management-Uses technical equipment and devices to monitor patient condition or sustain life.
g.Consultative-Serves as a consultative resource to staff providing expert knowledge that positively impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.

2.Behavioral - Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports psychosocial functioning and facilitates lifestyle changes.

a.Emotional Support-Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement during times of stress.

3.Safety - Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports protection form harm.
.Responds to all emergencies and disasters within the organization; coordinates associated Joint Commission survey activities
a.Code Management - Coordinates emergency measures to sustain life
b.Fall Prevention - Institutes and monitors special precautions with patients at risk for falling.
c.Infection Control - Minimizes the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents
d.Physical Restraint - Monitors the application, removal and documentation of restraining devices which are used to limit the physical mobility of the patient
e.Surveillance - Collects and analyzes information about the patient and the environment for use in promoting and maintaining patient safety

4.Family - Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports the family unit.

a.Family Involvement Promotion-Facilitates family participation in the emotional and physical care of the patient

6.Leadership - Oversees administrative responsibility for the hospital in the absence of department directors and nursing administration.
.Fosters a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital, providing developmental opportunities and encouraging teamwork
a.Supports and promotes excellence in customer service by promptly responding to concerns from patients, visitors, family members/significant others, physicians, and staff through own action and/or appropriate referral
b.Coordinates, integrates, and provides in services inter and intra departmentally.
c.Demonstrates critical thinking skills and facilitates development of these skills within staff
d.Participates in unit, department and/or organizational activities which promote improvements in patient care or administrative systems
e.Effectively/efficiently manages human & material resources
f.Conducts frequent rounds throughout the organization to ensure appropriate functioning of operations.
g.Assess and responds to the staffing needs of all nursing areas during present and ongoing shifts
h.Assists Leaders in the process of employee counseling and follow up documentation as necessary
i.Informs the administrator-on-call of any anticipated and/or actual issues/problems
j.Maintains knowledge of hospital policies and procedures, PI Plan and Plan for Patient Care.

7.Competency Skills List - Maintains knowledge, functions as resource to staff and ensures compliance to policies for:
.Maintains knowledge of Organizational Chart, Mission Statement and Strategic Plan
a.Maintains knowledge of Nursing Division Organizational Chart, Philosophy & Goals
b.Attends designated department/hospital committee meetings and communicates relevant information to colleagues
c.Ensures processes at time of death are completed: Death Certificate, Record of death, Medical Examiner, Organ Procurement, and Autopsies
d.Initiates and/or participates in the development of plans to mitigate critical census
e.Ensures completion of required reports: occurrence, employee injury, sentinel event
f.Manages process for OR cases after hours (on-call team or add on cases)
g.Ensures compliance with EMTALA documentation requirements by completing concurrent audits on all transfers.

8.Medication Administration - Reviews medication order for: Appropriateness of the drug, dose, frequency and route of administration, Therapeutic duplication, real or potential allergies or sensitivities, real or potential interactions between the prescription and other medications or food, current or potential impacts evidenced by laboratory values, other contraindications, variation from organizational criteria for use, other relevant medication related issues or concerns.
a.Demonstrates the ability to obtain drug information using Formulary One Source, Pyxis Lexi-comp or other references.

Qualifications

Experience Minimum Required
* 3-5 year charge nurse experience in an acute care hospital
Experience Preferred/Desired
* Management/supervisory experience in an acute care hospital
Education Minimum Required
* Completion of an accredited RN program
* Education Preferred/Desired
* Bachelor's in Nursing
Licensure and/or Certifications Required
* Registered Nurse License
* AHA or ARC BLS
Licensure and/or Certifications Preferred/Desired
