SUMMARYWeld County Public Works is looking for a Lead Worker- Gravel Roads division to direct the work of a small, specialized work force performing or supporting road maintenance or construction activities of the Public Works Department with advanced knowledge of road construction and maintenance procedures.This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.$30.20 - $38.26 per hour plus benefits (see benefits tab on the job posting).Open Until Filled As an applicant for this position, you should be aware of Senate Bill 19-085, the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Field Work (40%):• Operate heavy equipment related to the performance of the job duties.• Assist in the performance of the duties assigned to the work force.• Effectively communicate with outside contractors, employees from other divisions, other lead workers, foremen, and supervisors in order to carry out the mission of the Public Works Department.• Apply knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair work in a specialized area.• Make independent decisions to perform assigned tasks.• Communicate back to the foreman, problems and hindrances to accomplishing the work assignments.• Make necessary adjustments in the field to account for changing conditions and needs.Leadership (35%):• Demonstrate leadership skills consistently to successfully accomplish the duties and responsibilities described herein.• Direct and track individual employee/crews involving multiple locations for grader operators and/or work groups.• Perform higher level functions when working in emergency operations.• Effectively direct/supervise employees placed under the responsible charge of this position with an emphasis on safety protocol and leading by example.• Effectively communicate tasks and assignments to the work group(s) under their direction.• Layout and review work by field personnel related to all aspects of project.• Positively motivate team members to accomplish work assignment.• Demonstrate problem solving skills to overcome difficulties and hindrances to accomplish assigned work.Administration (15%):• Perform daily accounting duties such as loads hauled, material transported, and hours worked for the work group(s) utilizing addition, subtraction of two-digit numbers, multiplication, and division with 10's and 100's. Perform these operations using units of money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.• Familiar with Chapter 3 of Weld County Code.• Maintain good attendance, work schedule requirements and on-call duties. • Plan and organize workflow to accomplish the work assignments.Other Duties as Assigned (10%):• Carry out the daily assignments of the foreman.• Support emergency responses, weather operations and be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • • High school diploma or GED, AND• Three years working experience.• Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.• Write simple correspondence.• Effectively present information in one-on-one situations with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.• Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.• Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Must have a basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials.• Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date. • Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.• This position will participate in random substance use screening.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:• Three years working experience in a position equal to the Public Works Service Worker/Grader III positions.CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED:• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Employee will occasionally lift from ground to waist up to 196 pounds.The employee will occasionally stand, walk, climb, squat, crawl, stoop, kneel, carry, and reach overhead. The employee will regularly perform the following: sit, reach angularly, wrist flexion extension, elbow flexion/extension, supination/pronation, and grasp. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
