Farm Credit Farmers Market Manager/Local Food Coordinator Position

GENERAL WORK FUNCTIONS

The Farmer’s Market Manager plays a key role in supporting the mission and goals of the Farm Credit
Farmers Market: The mission of the Farm Credit Farmer’s Market is to promote local agriculture in
Wayne County and surrounding areas. The farmer’s market provides opportunities for local farmers,
artisans, bakers, and growing businesses to connect with consumers and promote local agriculture.
In addition to the onsite management of the market, the position is responsible for advancing marketing
opportunities for vendors, maintaining positive relationships with vendors, and helping make consumers
aware of the value of supporting local agriculture, and assisting in the coordination of events for multi-
purpose use. The market manager is an employee of Wayne County Cooperative Extension, a department
of County of Wayne government.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Willing to work a flexible schedule during the market season from April through December. The
manager must be physically available at the market during hours of operation which are
Thursdays 9am to 6pm, Fridays and Saturdays 9am to 3pm.

The purpose of this position is to provide a welcoming space to all vendors and customers,
provide training to vendors, provide suggestions to upscale the market, and to advertise the
market to potential customers and vendors.

Must be willing and able to provide professional recommendations and resolution to vendors.
This position will serve as the Local Food Coordinator for the County which is to promote the

production, marketing, and consumption of food grown and caught in Wayne County

Serves as primary contact for potential new vendors seeking to submit applications.
Provide guidance for compliance with market policies and procedures.
Develops good working relationships with all types of vendors and keeps service to the County,

the market vendors, and market customers at the forefront.

Recruit vendors to ensure a diverse mix and plentiful supply of locally grown foods, value-added
products, and artisanal quality handmade crafts.

Responsible for the advertisement of the market and market-related events, through social media
and other means, including educational, entertainment and other activities that will provide
increases in shopper and vendor attendance.

Prepare market site and provide set-up rules and assistance to market vendors and event
participants.

Collect vendor fees at the opening of the market day, issue receipts, and maintain appropriate
records.

Train on and enforce market rules, policies, and food safety standards by ensuring vendor
compliance. Provide an exit plan for those unwilling to comply or seek assistance to those unable
to comply.

Resolve any vendor conflicts as quickly and discreetly as possible based on established rules and
policies.

Ensure a clean market facility through daily task of removing trash, cleaning floors, tables, and
bathrooms.

Assure safety and security at the market at all times.
Remain at market until vendors have completed sales and ensure vendors properly clean their

spaces before departure.

Communicate with all vendors prior to weekly market to determine what will be available at the
market and assure their participation and the products they will make available. (This information
will be used for the weekly communication to the public through electronic newsletters, website,
social media and newspapers.)

Develop online newsletter that supports and recognizes the vendors, providing additional traffic
to the vendors’ websites and recognition of the offerings at the Farm Credit Farmers Market.

Maintain accurate records and documentation
o Producer/vendor membership status
o Vendor attendance and payments
o Copies of vendor certifications, licenses, and other required documentation

Estimate customer foot traffic either personally or through vendor reports.
Prepare and provide reports on market operations (customer and vendor counts, fees collected,

sales volume, complaints, suggestions, market needs, event updates and other relevant
observations).

In effort to grow vendor visibility and assist them in better marketing their products, provide
vendor training that promotes better presentation of their products.

Develop and maintain a working relationship with local media outlets and facilitate placement of
timely information about market vendors, products, events, and new developments.

Represent Farm Credit Farmers Market at relevant community planning meetings, activities, and
events.

Coordinate local food system programs and events
Explore and establish partnerships to promote and provide opportunities for “pop-up/mini”

farmers markets at community events

Connect consumers and producers; liaise for vendors and the community.
Promote and Utilize VisitNCFarm App.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Experience with project management, program coordination, event planning, community building
and marketing activities.

Physically able to lift 50 lbs.
Willingness to grow with this position and our market.
Must be reliable, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and friendly.
Ability to act as an enthusiastic ambassador for the market, growers, consumers and the larger

community.

Strong ability to communicate verbally and in writing, including ability to collect
information, write reports and manage data.

Demonstrated performance as self-starter with the ability to assess issues as they arise,
respond appropriately, follow-through on details and build effective working
relationships with others.

A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and email. Some newsletter
publishing/design experience is desirable.

Knowledge of the geographic area of Wayne County that the Farm Credit Farmers
Market serves including a working understanding of the region’s agriculture.

Knowledge of current issues impacting farmers’ markets, local foods, and agriculture.
Strong management skills, education and/or experience in a fast-paced retail/public

enterprise environment.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum:

High School Diploma/GED required
1-3 years demonstrated team management, administrative management and/or marketing

experience.
Preferred:

Associates degree in a related field -marketing, business management, project
management, etc.

3-5 years demonstrated team management, administrative management and/or marketing
experience.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED

Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to stand, walk, lift carry up to 50 lbs,
