Summary
At the direction of the Supervisor the Lead Operator assists in leading and coordinating activities of workers engaged in operations of the facility and trains operation personnel in the use, safety procedures and operation of heavy equipment or waste processing. Directly reports to the Operations Supervisor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may receive occupational exposures to ionizing radiation that are As Low As is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within regulatory limits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Leads employees in the Operations Department in projects.
• Inspects work areas to determine type of work required, materials needed and equipment to be used.
• Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
• Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work related goals.
• Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of production.
• Assists the Supervisor in analyzing and resolving work issues and assists employees in problem solving.
• Confers with supervisor to coordinate activities of individual department.
• Performs activities of workers supervised.
• Documents completion and status of all work activities in the appropriate work order and/or daily operations report.
• Assists in performing departmental training required for employees.
• Apply and reinforce the skills learned through human performance training to prevent personal errors and errors by other team members.
• Performs other related work activities as required.
• Conveys materials and items from receiving and/or production areas to storage and/or to other designated areas.
• May operate stabilization treatment system, process equipment, compactors and conveyor, pumps, valves, and control boards.
• May operate and maintain process equipment to include sorters, blaster, separators, compactors, and mixers.
• Handles and manages containers in compliance with regulations.
• May prepare records for tracking the movement and location of waste to and from the stabilization system.
• May collect samples of waste from containers and the stabilization tank system.
• Recognizes container leakage and/or damage.
• Collects and manages all spills of waste in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan.
• Operates roll-off bin truck.
• Performs preventative pre-op checks and maintenance for process equipment.
• Loads and unloads transport trucks.
• Performs disposal crew duties such as, mixing waste using a track hoe and prentice arm machinery.
• Ability to operate power industrial trucks, roll-off bin truck, hand trucks, and power jacks.
• Transports waste containers to site locations using various transport equipment including trucks, forklifts, or a container stacker.
• May prepare tracking records for the movement of waste on the site.
• General labor including housekeeping, general maintenance, and assisting other departments as required.
• Works closely with other Operators, which may also include training.
• Treats and disposes of hazardous/low level radioactive waste.
• May perform Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for routine operations.
• Apply and reinforce the skills learned through human performance training to prevent personal and other team member errors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Lead Operator Responsibilities
Leads employees at the direction of the Operations Supervisor and has responsibility in the field for carrying out operational activities for their assigned area. At the direction of the Supervisor carries out lead responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable law. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.

Education and/or Experience
Associates degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical institute in engineering or construction technology; or sixty hours related study in the field of hazardous waste management, environmental science and/or radiation health and two to three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret simple instructions and short correspondence. Ability to write simple correspondence Ability to conduct pre-job briefings to groups in a logical and organized manner Ability to develop & present safety related topics. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals, and small group situations

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide, in all unit of measures, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software and word processing software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and hot and cold weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may receive occupational exposures to ionizing radiation that are As Low As is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and within regulatory limits. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Working surfaces are often uneven and representative of a construction site.,
