Washoe County is Hiring a RECREATION SPECIALIST (TEMPORARY) Near Reno, NV

Under supervision, provides support and oversight to a wide variety of recreational programs and assigned staff including aquatics programs, special population programs, recreation programs, special events, and interpretive services; performs related work as required.

The Community Services Department – Regional Parks and Open Space Division is currently accepting applications for the temporary hourly Recreation Specialist position. The temporary hourly Recreation Specialists are full or part-time positions and last no longer than 6 months.

Temporary positions are not benefited positions.

Positions Available At The Following Locations:

Bartley Ranch Regional Park – Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater – Responsibilities: Manage and supervise the facility, staff and volunteers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for park participants and performers; coordinate and schedule facility rentals/special events and associated paperwork; collect fees; interpret department and park policies to the public; clean and maintain all areas of the facility; provide accurate records; collaborate with various private foundations, non-profit organizations and other groups to plan and implement various events/programs at the facility. Work schedule will vary based on theater programs, events and facility rentals. Evenings, weekends and holiday shifts may be required.

Washoe County Aquatics Facilities (North Valleys, Lazy 5 Splash Parks and Bower’s Mansion Regional Park) – Responsibilities: Will assist in management and supervision of the seasonal aquatics program to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all aquatics and park participants; collect fees and process associated reports and bank deposits; interpret department and park policies to the public; clean and maintain all areas of the facility; procurement and delivery of supplies including food and beverage service; provide accurate records; assist with health department legal compliance (monitoring water chemistry, file reports etc.). Work schedule may vary based on aquatics programs, events and facility rentals. Evenings, weekends and holiday shifts may be required.

Bowers Mansion Regional Park (Mansion) – Responsibilities: Greet the public and provide information concerning museum facility use, policies, and regulations; Make tour reservations and conduct guided tours of a museum facility, providing brief descriptions and background on the facility and items; Answer a variety of inquiries from the public; Sell tickets, post receipts, and maintain financial records of a museum facility; Maintain and prepare reports of facility activities including fees collected, public attendance, and facility use; Provide work coordination, training, and guidance for other facility staff; Perform routine maintenance and housekeeping tasks to prepare and maintain park facilities for public use; Conduct historical or other research relating the assigned facility; May open and close the facility; May have responsibility for operations of the facility in the absence of the supervisor or facility director.

An Associate Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, or a closely related field and one year of full-time experience working in the field of recreation; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License Or Certificate

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. The $40.25 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and be deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.

Temporary hourly employees are exempt employees. “Temporary hourly employee” means position is not to exceed six (6) months. Temporary Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775/687-4200 to check for yearly updates.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
