Wallace Community College is Hiring a Maintenance Worker I - Plumber Near Dothan, AL

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Maintenance, the employee is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical systems and components throughout the College. Employee maintains various mechanical systems, including plumbing, domestic water supply, wastewater, and compressed air and natural gas distribution systems. The employee also maintains pumps, plumbing fixtures, water coolers, sewer lines, storm drains, manholes, catch basins, compressed air systems, medical gas equipment, gas heating equipment and systems, and boiler/chiller piping. In the absence of the Director of Maintenance, the Technician is responsible for prioritizing and ensuring that maintenance tasks are performed in an efficient and effective manner to provide continuity of operations.

SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E3, 03 (range: $44,333 - $61,480).
ANTICIPATED START DATE: JULY 1, 2024
This position will be based initially at the Wallace campus in Dothan.
More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Mechanical Maintenance and Monitoring. Performs skilled mechanical and plumbing work to include the preventive maintenance, repair, and/or renovation of systems in order to maintain proper operation of all mechanical and plumbing fixtures and services on the WCC Dothan campus.

  • Performs assigned tasks by the Director of Maintenance through the use of an automated commercial work order system.
  • Analyzes, troubleshoots, and repairs and/or replaces mechanical parts, components, and systems in plumbing, water supply and distribution systems, natural gas and compressed air systems.
  • Determines the cause of equipment failures, selects components, and installs new equipment and services in accordance with applicable codes.
  • Performs maintenance and preventive maintenance on plumbing fixtures and systems; HVAC equipment, including large boilers, chillers, steam lines, and waste water systems.
  • Performs inspections and maintenance on manholes, pumps, piping, and storm drainage systems; natural gas and compressed air distribution systems.
  • Selects replacement components and completes installation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Mechanical Equipment Installation. Coordinates and performs mechanical installations for new construction and remodeling projects for WCC buildings and facilities. Maintains proper operation of campus buildings and facilities.
  • Installs code conforming plumbing, mechanical services, and distribution components in renovated areas of campus facilities.
  • Selects appropriate pipe and valve size, drain pipe size, and type and quality of fixture for application and installs according to requirements.
  • Correctly sizes and installs plumbing and mechanical services for new or relocated equipment.
  • Connects and disconnects machinery and equipment, including large HVAC units, shop equipment, boilers, water heaters, circulating pumps, and water coolers.
  • Properly connects and tests to ensure system operability.
  • Works from manufacturer's literature, technical manuals, and drawings.
  • Supports other Maintenance personnel in renovation work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Planning and Estimating. Provides technical support in the planning and estimation of mechanical systems maintenance work.
  • Plans and estimates repair jobs performed by outside contractors.
  • Develops recommendations on projects needing outside contracted personnel and presents to Director of Maintenance.
  • Coordinates contractor work to ensure uninterrupted operation of the College.
  • Monitors and verifies that repair work performed is completed and that work meets the system requirements for safe and efficient operation.
  • Makes cost estimates of necessary repairs to be performed by Maintenance department personnel and recommends repair/replace decisions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: General Operations. Performs general work and other activities to ensure efficient facility maintenance activities.
  • Performs routine maintenance on tools and equipment to include oiling, replaces belts, and changes spark plugs.
  • Moves office and classroom furniture.
  • Responsible for the moving and setup of furniture and equipment for all events that are College functions held on and off campus.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Performs a productive full day's work.
  • Ensures that service to students and the general public is top priority.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Three years of full-time experience in a plumbing trade is required.
  • Possess a current and valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to work nonstandard hours and overtime as required.
  • Prefer valid possession of a Master Plumber certificate.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE: The President will appoint an Advisory Screening and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interview, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, a screening committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.
