Volusia Flagler Family YMCA is Hiring a Swim Instructor Near Port Orange, FL

Guided by the mission of the YMCA, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching the YMCA swim lesson program as outlined, including Stroke Development, Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Rescue, and Water Sports and Games. Lessons will be taught in a group setting or as a private one-on-one lesson, depending on the needs of the program participant. Drug Free Workplace.

Core Functions:

Relationship Building – Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual’s goals and interests, and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.

Customer Service Excellence – Provide excellent customer service and positive communication to all customers, including but not limited to, members, participants, guests, volunteers, and fellow employees, by listening first and responding to their needs in a safe and effective manner.

Role Model – Model and encourage the development and practice of the YMCA character values (Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility), performing all assigned duties with energy and enthusiasm. Abide by all personnel policies and guidelines, follow all reasonable directives issued by leadership, and uphold rules, regulations and safety standards associated with the YMCA.

Annual Support Campaign – Provide support for the annual campaign and other special events when possible and as directed.

Risk Management – Remain familiar with risk management procedures in the YMCA facility, which include but are not limited to: swimming pool rules and procedures, current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, child abuse prevention, and understanding specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.

Job-Specific Functions:

  • Provide YMCA swim lessons according to the established daily YMCA swim lesson plans, including stroke development, personal safety, personal growth, rescue, and water sports and games. Assist in registration process to ensure participant is receiving the proper level of instruction. Complete evaluations of all program participants and encourage continuous aquatic learning.
  • Assist in preventing accidents and aquatic incidents and respond to emergencies, including first aid, as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining the overall general care and cleanliness of the aquatic facility. Inspect aquatic facility and report any unsafe conditions and equipment.
  • Maintain all swim lesson attendance records and rosters and update rosters on participants’ skills on a daily basis.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies in accordance with the emergency action plan (EAP), including whistle codes. Practice EAP regularly. Understand specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Get substitution for shifts when unavailable.
  • Be inspection ready in staff uniform with whistle, clip board with roster, lesson plans and any other equipment needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and/or Mental Requirements

  • Sight-Observe all assigned zones of the water area and be ready to assist in rescues.
  • Be able to physically demonstrate or communicate specific strokes and stroke development.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environment with background noise.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively to emergency personnel over phone and in person.

  • Knowledge and application of swim lesson instruction.

  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Good judgment under pressure, with the ability to make timely and sound, informed decisions.
  • Energetic interpersonal skills with willingness and ability to build and retain relationships with a diversity of children, parents, members, guests, volunteers and staff.

Prerequisites

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Certs/Licenses:

  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification
  • Nationally recognized Lifeguard certification (American Red Cross) or YASA (lifeguard assistant) certification or lifeguard certification
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED; First Aid; O2

Must complete pre-hire drug screen and criminal background check.
