For nearly 120 years, Volunteers of America Southwest has stepped forward through our ministry of service to help vulnerable individuals and families in our community by providing services and tools to improve their quality of life. Each year Volunteers of America Southwest directly serves over 13,000 vulnerable people by operating social service programs in the areas of education and social development of young children, behavioral health, veteran's services, housing and aging services in San Diego, Imperial, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

Job Opportunity:

Under direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Case Aide (part-time) will assist in the supervision of all resident activities in compliance to the house rules; perform assigned tasks such as, but not limited to: cleaning, food preparation, medication administration, and maintaining accurate logs and documentation of facility and resident case files. The Case Aide will be responsible for answering phone lines and gathering information from callers. Schedule is Tuesday through Thursday, from 7:30am-4:00pm.

About the Facility:

The Carlton G. Luhman Center for Supportive Living is a California licensed board and care facility for adults, ages 18-59, who struggle with chronic mental illness and disabling conditions. The 40-bed supportive living program offers individuals shelter and supportive services to adults in San Diego County. We also offer life skills classes and individual session for clients in crisis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform hourly visual observations of all residents to ensure their safety and well-being and document hourly in log book.
  • Intercept and screen incoming calls. Take accurate telephone messages to include name of person calling, date, time and purpose of telephone call.
  • Distribute medication (prescription or PRN’s) as directed and chart in daily medication log book as given.
  • Maintain offices and common areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Monitor and document residents doing limited facility chores, as outlined in their appraisal needs and assessment plans.
  • Monitor and document residents for appropriate hygiene practices, behavior and document nightly.
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks, and follow-up with the cleaning of the kitchen and dining room areas to include washing dishes and emptying trash.
  • Report and record any unusual incidents immediately regarding resident behavior, filling out incident reports when necessary and making written note of it in the resident’s progress notes.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Program Manager

Qualifications


  • Experience working with homeless, mentally ill, and/or veterans preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be approved by the California Department of Social Services (Criminal Record/Fingerprint/TB Physical Clearances). The Criminal Record Clearance and TB test must be completed prior to hire. 
  • Must be able to assess conditions and situations of individuals requesting emergency services.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and interact effectively with residents, family members, and staff.
  • Must demonstrate professional and proper telephone etiquette.
  • Must have strong sense of urgency, recognizing and evaluating a residents need for medical attention.
  • Must be able to obtain both CPR/First Aid and Food Handlers Card within 30 days of employment or provide copies of active CPR/First Aid and Food Handlers Card.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver License.
