Description

SUMMARY:

Volunteers of America Michigan is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and experienced Vice President of Development to lead our fundraising and communication efforts. The Vice President of Development and Communications will be a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic fundraising program. This role requires a deep understanding of various fundraising techniques and a proven track record in nonprofit development. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, exceptional communication abilities, and a passion for our mission. The Vice President of Development will operate in a metrics driven environment to forge new relationships to build Volunteers of America Michigan’s financial resources and impact brand awareness across the state.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead a team of dedicated fundraising and communications staff to best meet the needs of the organization. Provide development and coaching to enhance their fundraising and communications skills and competencies.
  • Monitor and report regularly on fundraising and communication metrics to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure integration of fundraising and communication strategies across all departments.
  • Represent the organization at external events and in the community to enhance its profile and develop new partnerships.

Lead all communications, public relations, and marketing efforts.

  1. Serve as the brand leader; partner with the CEO, the Core Team, and the Manager of Public Relations and Communications on enhancing the organizations brand positioning throughout Michigan.
  2. Partner with the CEO and strategic consultants on a brand awareness campaign, public relations strategies, and advertising.
  3. Partner with the Core Team, supporting both external and internal communications.
  4. Lead and manage the organization website and social media presence and monitor the ever-evolving marketing strategies and technology the organization can leverage to boost our brand awareness and visibility.
  5. Manage communications to support a positive and employee-centric organizational culture at Volunteers of America Michigan and coordinate with the program leadership team, facilitating storytelling on behalf of front-line staff and the individuals whom we serve.
  6. Manage all communications with VOA National including regular updates to the Friday Bulletin and the National VOA Leadership Team.
  7. Partner with the Vice President of Human Resources to improve our recruiting strategies tied to our website, social media strategies, and how we present the organization in the broader marketplace and community.
  8. Develop and maintain a metrics dashboard to support success in this area.
  9. Provide training regarding brand standards and ensure that they are maintained across the agency including, but not limited to, thrift, enterprise, agency wide, etc.

Development and fundraising leadership and strategy development:

  1. Plan and implement a development and fundraising program needed to grow revenue to meet the strategic goals of the organization through the solicitation of major gifts, management of special events, corporate and foundation support, annual giving and other areas of philanthropic activity
  2. Organize and implement innovative and effective fundraising strategies. Partner with the CEO, CFO and COO on fundraising goals including expanding the donor base and nurturing private foundation and strategic partnerships. Manage relationships with major donors and corporations.
  3. Expand and diversify Volunteers of America Michigan’s donor base to secure funding for current programs and new initiatives. In addition, work closely with the Board of Directors on development activities and support high level volunteers as they take on a more active fundraising role.
  4. Develop and implement a donor stewardship plan, including data analysis, donor identification, relationship cultivation, and donor solicitation.
  5. Identify opportunities to steward volunteers and in-kind donors and implement strategy to transfer to monetary donors.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Superb leadership, communication, written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively network within various communities and multiple stakeholder groups
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills, and ability to multi-task, track and prioritize tasks
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent and a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience. CFRE preferred.
  • Proven experience in driving results for nonprofits through grant writing, major and planned gifts, fundraising, event management, and communications.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing strategic communication plans aligned with organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
  • Expertise in designing and managing fundraising campaigns and events.
  • Excellent ability to develop relationships and a proven ability to interact with individuals at all levels and in all environments.
  • Proven success working within a fast-paced, dynamic work environment which requires the collaboration of multiple groups.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex ideas, strategies and results at the senior executive level.
  • Strong business acumen and knowledge of core business, financial metrics, and fundraising and communications data analytics. CRM and donor management software experience, preferred.
  • Strategic, critical, and creative thinking skills. Proven innovator.
  • Sound judgment and impeccable discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, own transportation and driving record that is acceptable to VOAMI’s insurer.
