Objective

Under the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Funding, the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) works in tandem with other Suicide Prevention Referral Engagement for Veterans (SERV) Program staff to find at-risk veterans and active-duty members in order to provide supportive services. The overall goal of the SERV Peer Support Specialist is to ensure high quality participant support throughout the duration of services in the SERV program with a secondary aim to connect with new organizations to engage new clients. The SERV Peer Support Specialist works to advocate for and support eligible participants as they are connected to various community resources with the case manager through the SERV Program. As a highly effective peer, the Peer Support Specialist teaches and models skills that help participants in recovery. As a member of the SERV team, and in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team, the Peer Support Specialist empowers veterans and provides a holistic, strengths-based approach to peer support and suicide prevention. When not engaging with clients, the PSS will additionally be tasked with recruiting veterans and active-duty members believed to be at-risk of suicide through creative outreach tactics as well as building relationships with organizations in our service area.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities

· Partner and collaborate with Case Managers, Outreach Specialist, SERV staff, VOAMI Veteran program staff (SSVF, GPD, VFSP, HVRP) and other departments when necessary as well as outside organizations and teams · Represent VOAMI and the SERV program in the community and engage in public events

· Develop relationships with community resources that encourage partnerships

· Travel within Michigan to meet potential participants and coordinating agencies

· Assist veterans with personal goal setting and problem solving

· Support use of suicide prevention safety plan

· Provide encouragement and promote wellness

· Serve as an advocate and provide support to clients in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services

· Work closely with diverse, at-risk populations

· Help the client identify their strengths, supports, resources and skills

· Ensure compliance with SERV requirements and VOAMI policies and procedures

· Attend SERV mandated trainings

· Ensure compliance with HIPAA Privacy Rule and all Federal laws and regulations regarding privacy practice procedures

· Participate in client case monitoring via individual client meetings, group meetings and with members of the SERV team

· Develop and maintain good working relationships with VOAMI staff, collaborative partners and external community

· Use clear and accurate communication skills (both verbal and written) to facilitate communication with the client

· Perform other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the supervisor as needed for the benefit of the Veteran, family, and quality of services provided

Requirements:

· Veteran - person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable

· Recovering or has recovered from a mental health condition

· High school diploma or G.E.D; certified Peer Support Specialist or willing to attend training to become certified

· Availability to work a non-traditional schedule that may include some evenings and weekends depending on client need and scheduled events

· A professional appearance and sensitivity to others

· Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task

· Information technology skills

· Ability to work effectively with individuals of varying incomes, skill levels, experiences and cultures

· Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

· Ability to speak and write clearly

· Must maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License, driving record that meets insurability requirements and have own transportation · Ability to travel for work 10-20% of the time

the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, use hands and fingers to manipulate keys on a keyboard, and drive. The vision requirement includes close and distant vision. Occasionally required to lift up to 10 pounds. Environmental Working Requirements:

Work is done in either an on-site or remote office environment with exposure to computer screens. Assignments may require work to be done on an individual basis or in teams with members at various staffing levels. The work environment, at times, may subject staff to behavioral and medical events that could be physically hazardous.

Other Requirements:

· The ability to work various shifts and irregular hours to meet agency’s needs.

· Attendance on scheduled shifts and participation in mandatory meetings and trainings.
