VLS Environmental Solutions is Hiring a Health and Safety Manager - Waste East Near Spartanburg, SC

The Health and Safety Manager is instrumental in supporting Waste operations by ensuring the effective implementation of OSHA standards and VLS Environmental Solutions' health and safety policies, practices, and procedures in field operations. The successful candidate will contribute to the company's success by embodying our health and safety culture with a strong, positive field presence. Reporting to the Director of Health and Safety, this role supports the Waste East division and is based at the Spartanburg, South Carolina facility.

JOB DUTIES

  • Collaborate with Waste East operational managers to ensure that work policies, practices, and procedures comply with all regulatory OSHA and VLS Environmental Solutions safety requirements.
  • Conduct quarterly health and safety site inspections at locations in the regional area of responsibility.
  • Conduct required annual instructor-led OSHA regulatory health and safety training, including VLS Safety Essentials.
  • Deliver new hire safety orientation training for new employees.
  • Develop required OSHA regulatory site health and safety plans.
  • Assist facility management with developing standard operating procedures to safely complete job tasks.
  • Visit client sites periodically to ensure VLS industrial teams identify safety hazards and implement corrective actions to prevent incidents.
  • Develop and distribute monthly safety flashes covering various safety topics and lessons learned from previous safety incidents.
  • Conduct incident investigation using the VLS SCAT mythology to identify root /contributory causes and determine corrective actions to prevent recurrence of incidents.
  • Support industrial services team with reviewing project scope of work documentation to identify job hazards and ensure safety plans are in place.
  • Manage all injuries to determine care for injured employees, ensure occupational health clinics are providing proper care from an occupational perspective.
  • Assist in the development of job hazard analysis to ensure job steps, hazards, and control methods are documented to identify hazards and prevent incidents.
  • Implement and lead site safety committees.
  • Work with human resources team to ensure employees working in safety sensitive positions receive annual fit for duty physicals.
  • Manage third party contractor qualification databases (ISNetworld/Avetta) ensuring all required health and safety information is uploaded.
  • Manage VLS Contractor Compliance database to ensure contractors meet VLS safety requirements.
  • Manage the VLS e-compliance incident management database for the regional area of responsibility regarding reporting incidents, injuries, near misses and entering employee training records.
  • Communicate with Director of health and safety regarding OSHA regulatory notifications.
  • Perform workplace hazard assessments to identify operational hazards and personal protective equipment for employee work areas.
  • Participate in monthly Waste East region resource conference calls to communicate all matters related to health and safety.
  • Mange and comply with all OSHA regulatory recordkeeping requirements regarding injuries.
  • Participate in conducting internal health and safety audits of the regional area of responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of health and Safety.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Health, Chemistry, Bioenvironmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or other engineering/science discipline.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in the health and safety field, preferably in the waste industry.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA local and federal regulatory standards.
  • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment drug & alcohol screen, and background check upon receiving an offer of employment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the successful candidate must be able to stand, walk, sit, ascend/descend stairs, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and/or hear.
  • Must be able to complete tasks both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Required to carry a company-provided cell phone and be available to respond during working and non-working hours.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to Florida location.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks successfully and simultaneously, often under short or changing deadlines, in a diverse and fast paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to organizational change.
  • Ability to work independently to prioritize and manage workload while providing timely turnaround on tasks.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, take direction from supervisor(s), focus attention on details, follow work rules and adhere to established work schedules.
  • Ability to interact with regulatory agencies and peers with self-confidence, poise, and professionalism.
  • Proficient in using MS Office Software features to effectively execute work tasks; and
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of OSHA 30-hour general industry or construction industry course.
  • Completion of 24-hour HAZWOPER course.
  • ASP or CSP certification
