What you do

Summary: Responsible for providing professional nursing care for office patients under the supervision of physicians and nurse practitioners in accordance with Virginia Women's Center's Service Standards of Excellence for Staff Members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Greets and prepares patients for examinations and assists provider.
  2. Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Conducts point-of-care testing at the direction of the provider
    • Instructs patients in the collection of specimens, as needed
    • Administers injections and medications
    • Dresses wounds and incisions
    • Interprets and transmits provider’s instructions to patients
    • Assists with minor surgery
  3. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients to include connecting patients for ECG testing.
  4. Enters medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into EMR at direction of provider.
  5. Demonstrates efficient navigation of Electronic Health Record and pertinent electronic applications.
  6. Obtains vital signs & history; records data in patient’s electronic chart.
  7. Prepares lab requisitions, prints labels, and verifies patient identity by name and DOB for all labs.
  8. Cleans autoclaves and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
  9. Educates patient and/or patient representative regarding medication and treatment.
  10. Oversees provider’s schedule and handles triage for emergent patients.
  11. Facilitates the efficient flow of patients.
  12. Notifies patients of test results as directed by provider or practice protocol.
  13. Maintains and updates surveillance of test results in computer system.
  14. Schedules patient testing and procedures as ordered.
  15. Assists with call backs to patients at provider’s request.
  16. Initiates prescription orders or drug refills upon review and approval of the provider.
  17. Initiates Advance Directives and updates as appropriate.
  18. Obtains authorizations and referral numbers as needed.
  19. Attends required meetings.
  20. Complies with Virginia Women's Center’s policies and procedures. Follows guidelines required by HIPAA, OSHA, and Red Flags regulations. Maintains appropriate attendance and punctuality as defined by Virginia Women's Center’s policy.
Qualifications

Education, Experience, and/or Licensure
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Virginia State Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse license.
  • Current CPR certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to primary care specialty.
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of primary care outpatient clinic procedures.
  • Knowledge of VWC's computer system software and its functionality as it pertains to patient care.
  • Skill in time management and prioritization.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
  • Skill in maintaining departmental quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and memos.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to maintain strictest patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate with patient to ascertain needs (requires independent judgment for assessing patient needs for appropriate preparation for exam; suggesting solution to patient phoning with problems; providing guidance and information regarding medication provided by physician).
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, administer medication, and connect patients for ECG testing.
  • Ability to demonstrate accuracy and efficiency in recording information in patient charts, in labeling specimens, and in giving test results to patients.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to respond with flexibility to changing work load or patient assignments.
  • Ability to perform effectively as a team member, supporting a patient-focused environment in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to type 30 words per minute.
Physical Demands
Varied activities including sitting, walking, stooping, lifting, bending, and reaching. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to use a variety of office equipment including phone, computer, keyboard, fax; and medical equipment including stethoscope, scales, and blood-pressure cuff. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Work Environment
Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Potential for exposure to Aerosol Transmitted Diseases (ATD) and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP).
