What you do

Are you a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with primary care experience? Come join our team!
Full-time Opening: 40 hours/week
Scheduled Shifts: Monday - Friday, optional Saturday (1/2 day) shifts available
Scheduled Hours: primarily 8-hour shifts with 30-minute lunch break, variable start times 
(ex. 7:15am-3:45pm, 8:30am-5:00pm, etc.)
Summary: Assists physicians and nursing staff with patient exams, tests, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Greets and prepares patients for examinations and assists provider. Facilitates the efficient flow of patients.
  2. Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, reviewing and/or recording medical history, confirming purpose for the visit.
  3. Obtains vital signs including pulse, body temperature, respiration rate, blood pressure, height, and weight. Records data in patient’s electronic chart.
  4. Prepares exam rooms, instruments, and gowns per appointment type.
  5. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients to include connecting patients for ECG testing.
  6. Conducts point-of-care testing at the direction of the provider.
  7. Prepares lab requisitions, prints labels, and verifies patient identity by name and DOB for all labs.
  8. Completes forms as appropriate.
  9. Assists with call backs to patients at provider’s request.
  10. Prepares and administers medications as ordered by provider.
  11. Administers immunizations and injections per protocol.
  12. Initiates prescription orders or drug refills upon review and approval of the provider.
  13. Under the direction of the provider may enter medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into EMR.
  14. Transmits patient education information approved by the provider.
  15. Initiates Advance Directives and updates as appropriate.
  16. Cleans autoclaves and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
  17. Demonstrates efficient navigation of Electronic Medical Record and pertinent electronic applications.
  18. Stocks clinical supplies in the exam rooms and nurses’ stations daily. 
  19. Attends required meetings.
  20. Complies with Virginia Women's Center’s policies and procedures. Follows guidelines required by HIPAA, OSHA, and Red Flags regulations. Maintains appropriate attendance and punctuality as defined by Virginia Women's Center’s policy.

Education, Experience, and/or Licensure
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Completion of a Medical Assistant training program. Medical Assistant Certification.
Current CPR certification preferred.
One-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of VWC's computer system software and functionality as it pertains to patient care.
Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to primary care specialty.
Knowledge of OSHA guidelines.
Knowledge of primary care outpatient clinic procedures.
Skill in time management and prioritization.
Skill in preparing and maintaining records.
Skill in maintaining departmental quality assurance and quality control standards.
Skill in performing assistance tasks appropriately.
Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and memos.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to type 30 words per minute.
Ability to maintain strictest patient confidentiality.
Ability to communicate with patient to ascertain needs (requires independent judgment for assessing patient needs for appropriate preparation for exam).
Ability to obtain vital signs and connect patients for ECG testing.
Ability to demonstrate accuracy and efficiency in recording information in patients’ charts and in labeling specimens.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to respond with flexibility to changing work load or patient assignments.
Ability to perform effectively as a team member, supporting a patient-focused environment in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and volunteers.
Physical Demands
Employees must possess the following physical requirements:
  1. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push up to 100 pounds (on wheels).
  2. Able to work on feet the majority of the day without tiring.
  3. Must be able to hear adequately to auscultate B/S4.
  4. Must have vision which is adequate to read increments on tuberculin syringe accurately.
  5. Must be able to reach above the shoulder level to work.
  6. Must be able to bend, squat and sit, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel, twist/turn.
Work Environment
Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. This position has exposure to Aerosol Transmitted Diseases (ATD) and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP).
