This recruitment is to fill a part-time Environmental Health Associate (EHA) role within our Environmental Health program and is based out of our Middlesex County Health Department.
As an EHA, this position performs EH support work requiring some independent judgment and knowledge of EH laws and regulations. Responsibilities may include drafting schematic drawings for water, well and septic system construction permits; takes field notes and information from the plat and application to develop schematics for the permit package using CAD software. The incumbent will complete various permit/certificate packages for the EH Specialists to review and sign. May review and explain permit or certification requirements to property owners/builders. Will perform on-site monitoring of completed wells and the compliance of the well location; will collaborate with the EHS personnel with reporting results. The EHA will monitor sites and collect soil and water samples in support of the sewage, swimming pool and marina programs and will also perform routine investigations of animal bites, monitors confined animals to observe conditions, may be required to remove animal heads for rabies examination and properly packages it for transport. This position will be primary for transports of rabies, soils and food specimens/samples and will perform other routine environmental investigations of low technical complexity in response to public health complaints such as : verifying excessive grass height, observing open trash, confirming the ongoing presence of standing water, etc..
The Three Rivers Health District is a 10-county district of health departments covering the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck areas of the Commonwealth. The District serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. As part of VDH, this position is a part-time state position with no health benefits or paid time off. This position will be responsible for traveling and working as necessary within reason, throughout the 10-county district, based on business need. Typical work hours are between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday working an average of 29 hours per week within those time frames. A valid State Driver's license is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. Required travel within the district with an agency vehicle when available or a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement eligible) may be required.
This is a RESTRICTED POSITION which is solely funded by the Infrastructure Grant. The availability of funding is through June 2027. Renewal and continuation of funding is contingent on the continued availability of grant funds.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience developing reports, gathering data and information for analysis, and keying data into the software database for reporting
Experienced providing effective communication both orally and written; excellent customer service skillset
Experience in basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Office
Experience in problem solving
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency
Additional Considerations
Experience in environmental health support
Ability to conduct inspections and investigations in all areas of environmental health
Ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds
CAD software experience
