Position Summary:

The Spiegel lab in the Departmentof Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Virginia Commonwealth University Schoolof Medicine, has openings for two postdoctoral scientists to study the functionsof bioactive sphingolipid metabolites including sphingosine-1-phosphate innovel signaling pathways important for obesity, inflammation, cancer, andmetabolic disorders. To study these, we utilize in vivo mouse genetics,confocal microscopy, viral-vector based cellular labeling and manipulation ofgenes, cell cultures and state-of-the-art biochemical and molecular approaches.We offer an intellectual, collaborative, and multidisciplinary researchenvironment to support career goals and provide access to modern facilities.Candidates with background knowledge and hands-on experience in biochemistry,molecular biology, or other relevant fields. Skills in sphingolipid biology areparticularly welcome.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Designand perform experiments
  • Analyze,interpret and discuss experimental data with PI
  • Writefirst drafts of manuscripts

Minimum Hiring Standards: 

  • Strongresearch background in sphingolipids, cell biology, molecular biology, and/or mousemodels
  • Evidenceof successful completion of a research project (publications)
  • Abilityto work independently
  • Interpret,present, and discuss experimental data
  • Excellentcommunications skills
  • Thiswill be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annualreviews
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhDor MD/PhD (or equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Experiencein sphingolipid biology

This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
