Victoria Independent School District is Hiring a Lead Mechanic Near Victoria, TX

Job Title: Lead Mechanic Employment Days: Non-exempt 261Days

Reports to: Shop Supervisor Pay Grade: Pay Grade: 7

Primary Purpose: Maintaining and/or repairing transportation department and other select district vehicles as well as other department equipment while always prioritizing safety and efficiency.

Salary: $18.27-$25.75

Qualifications:

Acceptable report from criminal history inquiry

Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License Class B with "P" and "S" endorsements or training will be provided.

Acceptable driving record as obtained from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)

Must pass pre-employment drug test.

Must pass pre-employment annual State DOT required physical examination.

Must pass annual FMCSA DOT required drug and alcohol test.

State Vehicle Inspector License within 90 days of employment

ASE Certification

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Successfully complete twenty (20) hour Texas DPS School Bus Driver Certification Course within first six months of employment

Special Knowledge/Skills

Five years' experience in in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline engines. Ability to read, understand and communicate in English.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Be knowledgeable and remain current with all pertinent local, state, and federal regulations. and guidelines with regards to facilities and environmental compliance issues.

Clear understanding of the high priority placed on safety.

Ability to work cooperatively with people.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all school buses, Transportation Department service vehicles, select other district vehicles, as well as related shop equipment.

2. Perform preventive maintenance inspections required and specified by manufacturer and department standards. Inspections include checks on all systems, oil changes, lube, transmission service, etc.

3. Repair adjust and troubleshoot air brake systems including air compressors, air dryers, air lines, governors, air valves, and relay valves.

4. Prioritize safety-sensitive work orders and communicate conditions which compromise safe operation of the vehicle and restrict its usage until all repairs are completed and inspected for placement back in service

5. Communicate the status of out-of-service vehicles and/or equipment to the Shop Foreman and/or transportation office well in advance of each route for which said vehicle would ordinarily be needed and for which a spare bus would be required.

6. Maintain accurate work orders of all shop and maintenance related work and submit to Shop Foreman as work is completed.

7. In cooperation with Shop Foreman, monitor all vehicle and equipment odometers or hour meters to assure timely service intervals.

8. Report any unusual conditions to the Shop Foreman for discussion or advice.

9. Assist in routine daily fleet fueling and under-the-hood checks.

10. Perform annual state inspection on assigned district vehicles.

11. Operate and maintain all related shop equipment and facilities in a safe and efficient working order.

12. Inspect front and rear suspension, repair or replace suspension components, spring hangers, kingpins, bushings, torque rods, swing arms, lines, hoses, hubs, and bearings.

13. Inspect and service air and hydraulic brake systems including brake shoes, pads, drums, rotors, bearings, and warning systems.

14. Trouble shoot cooling, charging, and starting systems on all department vehicles.

15. Remove and replace components related to these systems on both the light and heavy- duty vehicles.

16. Acquire technical updates from the Shop Foreman on vehicles and equipment as necessary.

17. Inspect and troubleshoot fuel systems, Repair, or replace pumps, injectors, injection pumps and mechanical/electric controls, throttle body assemblies, lines, hoses, and tanks as needed.

18. lnspect and repair air conditioning systems and components on both light and heavy- duty vehicles.

19. Participate in road calls as needed.

20. Demonstrate good attendance and punctuality.

21. Aid in emergency response rescue in the event of natural or man-made disaster. 

22. May be required to drive a route as needed.

23. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Electronic time clock.

Power and hand tools, welding equipment, hydraulic jack, brake lathe, and other tools and equipment related to light and heavy-duty vehicles maintenance.

Working Conditions:

Heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, climbing bus steps repeatedly within a duty cycle. Maintain emotional control under stress. Work outside and inside, around vehicles and frequent exposure diesel and gas fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
