Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Sterile processing technician Near Phoenix, AZ

Summary The Phoenix VA Health Care System is recruiting for Lead Medical Supply Technologist (Sterile Processing), in the Sterile Processing Service line.

The position is located at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, Sterile Processing Service.

The Lead Medical Supply Technician is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and inspection of Reusable Medical Devices.

Responsibilities The VA Phoenix Health Care System is one of the leading health care systems serving Veterans in the VA Desert Pacific Network.

We're an innovative care center within the Veterans Integrated Service Network 22 (VISN 22). VISN 22 includes medical centers and clinics in Arizona, Southern California, and New Mexico.

The Lead Medical Supply Technician (MST) possesses the knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Devices (RMD). The Lead MST required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which document the processes, and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RMD.

The Lead MST will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RMD. The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to : Assembles basic sets and surgical trays for procedures at the Phoenix VA Health Care System.

Instructs staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow, and / or job specializations.

Revises work schedules to meet anticipated, and unanticipated changes in the workload. Monitors and reports on the status of work Ensures SOPs and Sterile Processing Services mandates are followed during the performance of workflow.

Reviews work in progress, or spot checks work to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material, and instrumentation.

Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals.

Resolves conflicts and problems dealing with the customers, and staff constructively, and appropriately. Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization, assembles basic sets, and trays used throughout the medical center, including those used in the operating room.

Work Schedule : Tours include Monday - Friday : 600am-230pm, 8am-430pm, 9am-530pm,330pm,12am, 9pm-530am; on Saturday - Sunday : 7am-330pm.

On- Call. Holidays. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus) : May be available for highly qualified candidate at service discretion.

Pay : Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off : 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Parental Leave : After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy : After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.

Qualifications Basic Requirements : Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Experience : Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant' ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work;
  • OR, Education : One year above high school that includes at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses, or other courses related to the position;

Note : Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid / non-paid employment as a Medical Supply Technician. Please make sure that your experience is evident in your resume, and hours worked per week for each work experience entry is included, or your resume will be considered incomplete, and you will be considered "ineligible" for the position.

OR, Combination : Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Grade Determinations : GS-7 Experience or Education : Experience : At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.

In addition, must demonstrate the following are met : a) Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.

b) Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules, and regulations. c) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.

d) Knowledge of sterility principles to instruct staff on decontamination procedures. e) Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

OR Education : Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Experience : At least one (1) year experience as a Medical Supply Technician, or related occupation, Certified by International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), or Certified by Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Assignment : The Lead MST works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and / or job specializations.

Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload.

Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow.

Reviews work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisor's instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation.

References : VA Handbook 5005 / 83, Part II, Appendix G47. Physical Requirements : This work is performed in various settings : decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility / campus.

The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, Needle Sticks, and other injuries from handling equipment.

The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of sterile products and packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).

The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment.

The employee wears special clothing, hair covers, personal protective equipment and shoe covers that can be uncomfortably warm.

The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown.

The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.
