Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Laboratories Manager will provide leadership and oversight of the Cognitive Science department's research and teaching laboratories and the activities that those facilities support. The laboratory activities include but are not limited to academic courses, independent studies, research intensives, senior theses, summer research fellowships, and faculty research. This position requires training and experience in the use, design, maintenance, and replacement of scientific equipment and their software, hardware, infrastructure, and workflows. The Manager, who reports to the Chair of the Department of Cognitive Science, is responsible for the laboratories' daily operations, including, but not limited to, safety training and compliance of users, coordinating use by faculty members and students, and assisting students and faculty in the use of equipment and the enactment of workflows involving the equipment and the laboratories.
This is a part-time, 25 hour per week, benefit eligible position.
Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and support the daily operations of the department's two shared laboratories that are used for teaching and research: (1) the Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory and (2) the EEG/Eye Tracking Laboratory.
  • Learn to operate existing and new equipment and their workflows.
  • In collaboration with faculty, design, build, and program robots for teaching and research.
  • Program, operate, and trouble-shoot EEG and eye-tracking systems.
  • Create, build, purchase, maintain, and upgrade equipment and their workflows in collaboration with faculty.
  • Assist students and faculty in the use of the equipment and their workflows.
  • Trouble-shoot and fix, or have fixed, equipment and workflows that fail.
  • Create and maintain clean, safe, orderly, and accessible laboratories.
  • Create and maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment, and critical software and data
  • Manage the budgets associated with the laboratories in collaboration with faculty.
  • Liaise with students and faculty of other programs and departments to coordinate the sharing of laboratories, software, and equipment with and among different facilities.
  • Supervise and support laboratory safety.
Qualifications
  • Masters degree in computer science, natural science, engineering, or related field.
  • Expertise in the operation of two or more types of scientific equipment or workflow, including an understanding of their principles of operation, their calibration or validation, and their limitations and artifacts.
  • Working knowledge of one or more programming languages, including, but not limited to R, MatLab, Python, and C.
  • Experience performing independent research, managing projects, or collaborating on research teams is preferred.
