About Vartega

Vartega is making carbon fiber more accessible to more industries by solving the world’s toughest advanced materials recycling challenges.

In 2023, we expanded our operations into a 82,000 sq ft facility to increase production of our EasyFeed carbon fiber bundles. We are hiring a Chief Operating Officer to oversee the day-to-day operations of the company, monitor and improve operational performance, and help Vartega be a world class leader in composites recycling.

Job Description

The Chief Operating Officer will report to the CEO and support the growth of the company through the creation, implementation and leadership of systems and procedures, establishing the foundation for continued operational success. The COO will also work with the entire executive team to manage financial resources, and create and implement business plans to achieve the company's long-term goals. Similar prior experience may include Chief Operating Officer, VP of Operations, Director of Operations, General Manager, or Plant Manager.

Role and Responsibilities

  • LEADERSHIP
    • Encourage and promote Vartega’s First Principles: Safety, Quality, Sustainability
    • Engage as an active listener to understand challenges, diffuse tension, break down barriers, and manage and mediate conflict
    • Effectively manage and communicate expectations up and down the organization
    • Communicate and explain new directives, policies, or procedures to managers; for major changes, meet with entire operations staff to explain changes, answer questions, and inspire others
  • TEAM DEVELOPMENT
    • Work with department heads and HR to:
      • create job descriptions and hire high-performing personnel 
      • develop and implement guidelines for employee evaluation, recruitment, and promotion
      • oversee employee productivity, training, and personal/career growth
      • ensure company wide operational compliance, ensuring the company runs with legality and conformity to established regulations and standards
  • OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
    • Provide operational oversight for multiple sites, departments, and business lines
    • Oversee Production, Quality, Maintenance, Warehouse, Facilities, and Supply Chain departments
    • Lead and oversee the company’s continuous process improvement efforts
    • Be a subject matter expert in process improvement, organizational design, and management/measurement systems
    • Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics, guidelines, and standards by which the company’s efficiency and effectiveness can be evaluated; identify opportunities for improvement
    • Work with department heads to establish policies and procedures
    • Define, implement and revise operational policies, procedures and guidelines that will improve day-to-day operations
    • Lead coordination and integration of efforts among operations, engineering, technology, customer service, and quality divisions to produce smoother workflow and more cost-effective business processes
    • Manage procurement processes and coordinate material and resource allocation to improve the cost efficiency of business operations
    • Keep track of the company’s revenue margins and conduct budget reviews to maximize profits/reduce cash burn
  • GROWTH AND SCALE
    • Drive the planning and orchestration of business objectives, including but not limited to, implementation of ERP software
    • Identify and research geographies and sites to plan for future expansion and growth into other markets and territories

Qualifications

  • 10 years experience working in an operations role and 5 years in a management or leadership capacity
  • Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience growing an organization or line of business from $5M to $50M in revenue
  • Experience in an ISO or other quality focused manufacturing environment
  • Experience with fiberglass, carbon fiber, composites, polymers, plastics, or food and bev
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business or a technical field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Robust understanding of project management, scheduling, and budgeting
  • Understanding of practices, theories, and policies involved in business and finance
  • Knowledge of performance evaluation metrics in a business setting
  • Demonstrated success in creating creative and practical solutions to increase employee productivity and maximize profitability
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics
  • Working knowledge of lean manufacturing, six sigma, and other continuous improvement philosophies
