Valley Humane Society is Hiring a Volunteer Program Coordinator Near Pleasanton, CA

As a member of Valley Humane Society’s team, the Volunteer Program Coordinator directly inspires and supports the incredible work contributed to the organization through volunteer support. Volunteers are a powerful resource in all Valley Humane’s lifesaving and life-enriching programs. This role is ideal for someone who loves to empower the success of others through training, mentoring, constructive feedback, and direct support. The position requires skills in database management, training, and human resources.

Reports to: Volunteer Program Manager

Essential Duties and Functions:

Volunteer Coordination and Training:

  • Maintain daily volunteer schedules and activities utilizing Valley Humane Society’s volunteer management system (Volgistics).
  • Monitor, track, mentor, and remove volunteer, as needed to keep a well-trained volunteer corp.
  • Provide administrative support to Volunteer Programs Manager.
  • Cultivate positive public, volunteer and coworker relations through professional and courteous interactions.
  • Coordinate and lead new volunteer orientations, as needed.
  • Provide training and mentor support to new facility volunteers.
  • Maintain volunteer training materials to meet the changing needs of the operations and veterinary teams.

Operations:

  • Follow cleaning and care protocols to ensure animal husbandry standards.
  • Work closely with Operations team to ensure volunteer training and interactions are safe.
  • Follow animal care guidelines and Fear Free standards in all trainings and mentor shifts.
  • Utilize Fear Free animal care and handling to help reduce stress and increase quality of life for Valley Humane animals.
  • Work with Volunteer Programs Manager to report volunteer issues, including exceptional service and areas for improvement.
  • Utilize PetPoint animal management system for individual animal information.
  • Follow all standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Ensure safe work environment by following safety guidelines for staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Adhere to local and State regulations.
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a shared office environment with periodic exposure to cats and dogs, animal allergens, animal kennels, cleaning solutions, and veterinary medicine.
  • Able to lift, carry, and position objects weighing up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations when moving supplies, records, equipment, or animals.
  • Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Regularly moves about the facility to coordinate work.
  • Typically sits or stands for extended periods of time.
  • Regularly sits at computer stations and operates electronic equipment.
  • Performs repetitive tasks with few breaks
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to create a positive, fun, and appreciated volunteer workforce.
  • Great team player with a can-do attitude.
  • Detail-oriented; ability to recognize urgency, prioritize, and act quickly.
  • Exercise good judgment when dealing with confidential information.
  • Skilled at developing and documenting effective policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively develop and manage volunteers.

Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or equivalent, preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Basic knowledge of care and treatment of cats and dogs, including handling, training, feeding, and cleaning.
  • Computer skills and data management in a Windows environment and other computer programs (Volgistics preferred).
  • Available to work weekends, evenings, and holiday shifts, as needed.
