Position Title: Payroll Accountant

Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. (VTF) is a nonstock corporation established in 1948 for the sole purpose of managing the endowment and real estate portfolio of Virginia Tech, now valued at $2.8 billion. VTF exists and operates as a separate, independent entity with its own officers and governing board — managing, investing, and distributing private resources to advance Virginia Tech’s mission and its strategic priorities. VTF’s wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, Inc., is a research park that catalyzes commercialization and industry collaboration.

Position Summary:

The Payroll Accountant reports directly to the Controller. This position is responsible for overseeing and supervising all payroll functions within the organization, guaranteeing that pay is processed punctually, accurately, and strictly adhering to government regulations. Additionally, the role involves managing benefits vendor payments, conducting reconciliations, facilitating 990 reporting, and offering general assistance to the Controller.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Collect and verify timesheets, attendance records, and other relevant data for accurate payroll calculation.
  • Input and process payroll data, including regular and overtime hours, deductions, and bonuses, using the payroll software/system.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
    • Review and audit payroll data to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
    • Generate and facilitate direct deposits in accordance with the established pay schedule.
    • Address payroll-related inquiries from employees and provide assistance as needed.
    • Annual reporting & assist with 990 preparation
    • Journal entries related to payroll
    • Reconciliation of payroll clearing funds
    • Responsible for all benefit vendor payments and tracking
    • Ensure confidentiality and security of sensitive employee information.

 Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Accounting required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • 3-5 years of related experience required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate across departments.
