Uvalde Memorial Hospital is Hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) - Women's & Newborns (Seasonal - 36 Hours/Week) (Nights) Near Uvalde, TX

JOB SUMMARY

Directs and coordinates all nursing care for Labor and Delivery, Nursery, and Post Partum units for adult and newborn patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards for patients on an outpatient and inpatient basis. Reports to OB Manager. Non-Exempt position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs Registered Nurse duties within the RN scope of practice.

Responsible for management of laboring patient and fetal monitoring.

Responsible for care of the newborn from birth through discharge to home or a higher level of care, including the duties of resuscitation, stabilization, and intermediate care.

Responsible for education to new mothers on breastfeeding resources and techniques. Consults with lactation consultant when needed.

Recovers patients after deliveries, c-sections, or other procedures.

Performs admission and daily assessments.

Provides instructions to patients, family members, significant others as appropriate. Communicates information about the delivery progress, as directed. 

Assist anesthesia personnel with epidurals and other procedures as needed. 

Serves as a resource person for updating or improving patient care practices within the setting and as a preceptor when the need arises.

Documents in writing the specifics of performance during codes as well as post action follow ups and conveys this information to the supervisor/charge nurse.

Documents in the electronic medical record in a clear, concise and accurate manner all information related to the patient’s procedure based on the established plan of care.

Participates in all procedures to ensure a time-out process is conducted. 

Collaboratively works alongside the surgical teams to prepare the rooms in a timely manner for all procedures.

Ensures that all specimens are handled appropriately and in accordance with hospital policy.

Assists in positioning to ensure proper positioning to protect the patient from injury, prepping and draping of all patients for procedures.

Ensures that the surgical field is maintained throughout the entire case.

Assist with cleaning/processing instruments

Ensures instrument decontamination policy is followed when transporting instruments.

Assist with daily case picking/pulling, restocking post cases, and organization of equipment for storage when use is completed.

Informs charge nurse of changes in patient condition and confers as to determine need before calling physician.

Addresses patient and family concerns and directs concerns to charge nurse as needed.

Communicates with physicians/charge nurse /co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptoms.

Responsible for reassessments in all aspects of patient care.

Formulates plan of care that is individualized according to patient’s needs.

Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Interprets data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.

Gives and receives comprehensive report on assigned patients and delivers prompt, accurate, and safe nursing care.

Ensures all labs, x-rays, and other reports are reviewed and called to physician as necessary.

Keeps up with orders and notes orders timely and accurately.

Ensures patient charges are documented.

Provides an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.

Continually monitors and assesses patient for changes in patient condition and calls physician when needed.

Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, and includes family in teaching as appropriate.

Handles and administers medications according to policy and procedure

Follows proper procedure to report any damaged product/equipment/instrumentation.

Maintains a safe and quiet environment for the patients and clinical staff.

Minimum Education

Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure. 

One year of recent Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery experience preferred.

Current BLS for healthcare provider certification required. 

ACLS required within 6 months of hire.

Basic Fetal Monitoring certification required within 6 months of hire (or transfer into OB).

Intermediate Fetal Monitoring required within one year of hire (or transfer into OB).

Advanced Fetal Monitoring required after 3 years of hire (or transfer into OB).

Neonatal Resuscitation Certification (NRP) certification required within 6 months of hire (or transfer into OB).

Neonatal STABLE course required within one year of hire.

Required Skills

Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Advanced computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

Job requires heavy lifting on an occasional basis.
