Job Description
The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is looking for an innovative, collaborative, and evidence-based Secondary Mathematics Specialist to envision and oversee Secondary Mathematics initiatives for our agency.
The Secondary Mathematics Specialist plans, develops, promotes, implements, and evaluates programs in this area and provides statewide training for education stakeholders of all levels, including School Districts and Charter Schools, other state agencies, and the public.
They will also coordinate with colleges, universities, and other educational institutions to improve the pre-service and in-service education of teachers and administrators.
Principal Duties
As the Elementary Mathematics Specialist, you will :
- Work with Utah Mathematics leaders related to updating the Utah Core Mathematics Standards.
- Collaborate with mathematics leaders in finding coherence across various projects.
- Review and approve educator endorsements in secondary mathematics.
- Use LEA input to identify project priorities, resources and timelines.
- Facilitate professional development workshops for a variety of purposes and stakeholder groups.
- Find the intersection of various stakeholder groups’ needs in crafting policy.
- Implement the Strategic Plan of the Utah State Board of Education in Utah’s mathematics communities.
- Serve on various boards, councils, committees and task forces to coordinate USBE efforts.
- Travel to various locations for professional development and / or professional meetings.
- Collaborate deeply with other USBE Specialists in carrying out tasks.
- Create professional learning, resources, and supports around the Utah Core Mathematics Standards.
- Engage and support LEA communities from a variety of backgrounds, locations, and cultures both in-person and remotely.
- Ensure that the lens of equity is used across all initiatives.
- Build the capacity of mathematics leaders across the state and leverage those leaders in creating supportive networks.
- Collaborate with Institutions of Higher Education to ensure fluency of messaging / instruction.
- Manage the state website with up-to-date, vetted resources.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess :
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field of study
- A current level 2 or 3 Utah State Board of Education license with a Level 4 or High School mathematics endorsement
- Coaching and / or administrative experience in mathematics education
- At least 5 years of classroom teaching experience is required
Preference(s)
Preference may be given for :
- A Master's degree
- A Doctorate degree
- Policy experience
