Responsibilities

This position in Pathology provides individualized assistance to clinicians, treatment teams, ancillary testing company representatives, patients, and pathology faculty to achieve patient-centered, evidence-based care; acts as a link between the department of pathology, patients and care providers to facilitate pathology services; works with care teams to overcome obstacles to specimen testing requests by utilizing all available resources, both internal and external, to improve care outcomes; serves as Pathology Patient Navigator to USA Health Physician Group specialty areas/service lines and outside institutions by providing information, support, and assistance to patient care teams and testing facilities; maintains frequent contact with care teams and testing facilities by telephone, in writing, and by email; maintains communication with the patient’s care team as well as their primary care provider to facilitate timely identification of patient issues to prevent care delays; stays abreast of all aspects of service line care and treatment methods; provides patients, care teams and testing facilities with information regarding access to resources and support; maintains navigation records in a timely manner using a database; maintains confidentiality and exhibits professional conduct when interacting with patients, care teams, and medical professionals; Organize specimen records and manage shipping of specimens from the Department of Pathology, to facilitate timely services; Facilitates scheduling of specimen pick-up appointments for patients and clinical trials staff; collaborates with Clinical laboratory staff for reference lab send outs and management resources; Acts as a back up to other pathology positions; Oversees send out related duties performed by other pathology staff members; Matches unmet needs with referrals to internal and external resources, including but not limited to pathologist, lab management, testing representatives; Identifies alternative payment resources for the non-insured and underinsured; Serves as a patient advocate on the multidisciplinary team; Oversees all phases of specimen send out/referrals and tracking from request to return; Articulates service and customer relations improvements to ensure effective handling of all patient specimens; Participates in service line performance improvement activities; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and four years of related experience in a laboratory setting; or successful completion of a vocational program in a healthcare related field and one year of related experience. Higher education may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
