US National Park Service is Hiring a Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation) Near Coolidge, AZ

Duties

Major Duties:

  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of such.
  • Assists in the maintenance, repair and stabilization of prehistoric and historic ruins and sites built of stone, mortar and adobe.
  • Assist other higher-graded employees under general supervision in preservation work, general landscaping and grounds maintenance, basic carpentry, simple electrical installations or repairs, basic plumbing work, and painting interior and exterior surfaces, and perform a variety of janitorial services.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Performs simple and basic research of records pertaining to historic and/or prehistoric structures for the purpose of assessing their physical condition, style, preservation needs and conservation work required.
Uses cameras, GPS, computers and software programs to document historic preservation work performed.
Working Conditions, e.g., outdoors, heavy lifting, etc.
The position requires working outdoors and indoors in all types of weather, and in temperature extremes from the low 30's to over 110 degrees F. Works in areas that are dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gasses and fumes. Is exposed to venomous snakes and insects. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, climbing and standing, and in cramped positions. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items up to 50 pounds, use of ladders, and is subject to falls, cuts, bruises and electrical shocks.
Temporary employment not to exceed 1039 hours. Incumbent of this position will be required to wear a uniform. Tour of duty may include weekends and holidays; daily schedules vary between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors(temperatures-40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Working Conditions: General work is done at prehistoric and historic structures and ruins throughout the park. Often these are in backcountry locations with difficult access that may require rappelling and the use of scaffold and ladder systems. The structures and ruins may be extremely deteriorated and structurally unsound, and therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and direct and of such nature that protective equipment and clothing such as hard hats, safety shoes, goggles, respirators, and ear protection are required, whether working indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, fumes, and hazards associated with power equipment or preservatives. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poisonous plants can be encountered. Assignments could involve working with hazardous materials, such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead-based products, etc. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices.
