Job Title

Urban Outfitters – Design Assistant, Dresses

Overview

The Urban Outfitters Design Assistant executes entry level design functions and provides support in internal/external communications, sample management, record keeping, tracking changes throughout the design process and additional duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the Design Process as needed – sketching, sewing mocks, communicating and managing details, changes and information.
  • Professionally communicate via email and in person with outside vendors, design, production and buying team members. 
  • Create and update all style tech packs in Tradestone ensuring accuracy for entire life cycle of each style
  • Daily communication with vendors on style intent, comments and approvals and sending artwork/color requests
  • Manage new and purge old samples and fabric utilizing our Sample Sale and Fabscrap programs
  • Attend weekly design and production meetings, and final sample review, assisting in set up and clean up as needed and keeping accurate notes
  • Assist in preparing presentation materials for seasonal benchmark meetings such as Sketch Review, Finalization, and Print Color Day
  • Update line sheets weekly. 
  • Maintains awareness of trend, shares research and inspiration (blogs, magazines, retail experience, street-style, and vintage exploration as it relates to the UO product)
  • Create, update and maintain tech packs in PDM. Communicate fit and construction details to Technical Design department. Complete all technical sketches for domestic and overseas programs. 
  • Manage weekly fittings.
  • Provide creative and administrative support to the Design team as needed.

Skills

  • The ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends. 
  • Ability to articulate ideas clearly and inspire.
  • Proficient with technology; Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD, Procreate, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Ability to sew, mock and drape.
  • Organizational skills necessary to manage multiple tasks and projects, and complete them within deadlines. The ability to delegate and direct the daily activities of the assistants and associate designers and provide direction to the team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to develop partnerships throughout the organization
  • Develops well thought out comments and opinions using both POV and data to contribute during meetings
  • Receives feedback with a willingness to collaborate on ideas and make changes as necessary
  • Effectively manages up in a timely manner

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of fashion trends and the Urban Outfitters customers 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite. Experience in Tradestone or PLM Systems welcomed but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and effectively communicate and collaborate on a team.
  • Entry level technical knowledge of apparel construction 
  • Entry -level knowledge of fabric and trims as well as strong relationships with resources 
  • Some knowledge of fabric treatments as well as wash and dye techniques 
  • Some knowledge of manufacturing techniques and processes 

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design or related field preferred.
