POSITION SUMMARY:

The School Based Mental Health Clinician provides mental health services to children in the school setting. The School Based Mental Health Clinician is responsible for assessing the child’s mental health needs, formulating recommendations for treatment interventions, and providing school based individual therapy. The School Based Mental Health Clinician will collaborate with other school based providers, such as teachers and counselors, to assist in identifying supports and services for the child and the family to access both within the school and in the community. The School Based Mental Health Clinician will encourage engagement with the child, family, community supports, and school based providers to develop a client-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed treatment plan to address emotional, social, and behavioral health needs. The School Based Mental Health Clinician will ensure compliance with Governmental and Agency regulations and operating standards, act as a liaison with other Divisions/Agencies, serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, and provide crisis intervention services.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Activities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct clinical interviews and comprehensive assessments to identify the mental health and behavioral needs of students
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify students at risk of harm to self/others, develop safety plans, and/or coordinate a response to any identified risk
  • Establish diagnoses, treatment recommendations and plans, and provide evidenced-based psychotherapy for children in the school environment
  • Promote the child’s recovery by coordinating, developing, and implementing a treatment plan, in partnership with the child, family, school staff, and other community or collateral supports
  • Encourage the involvement of family or significant supports in the treatment process to either conduct family therapy sessions or make appropriate referrals to meet these needs of the family, when indicated
  • Meet with the child and family members/collateral supports in the clinic setting to reduce barriers to care and encourage involvement of the child’s supports in the treatment plan
  • Document in Electronic Health Record, per applicable governing bodies, such as Office of Mental Health (OMH) and Insurance guidelines, to ensure compliance with all requirements
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy requirements as required by the Agency and regulatory bodies
  • Provide linkage, referral, and case management, as clinically indicated
  • Participate in agency, school based, or community activities that may include meetings, trainings, committees, and community events
  • Attend individual and group supervision with supervisor to maintain licensing requirements and fulfill any and all CEU requirements for licensure maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • LMSW, LCSW, LMFT, or LMHC and one (1) year post-graduate experience. NY State Licensure or Limited Permit required
  • Travel is required. Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
  • This position has regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with individuals receiving services and is required by law to be fingerprinted for a criminal history record check under OMH (Office of Mental Health)
  • Computer Skills and the ability to utilize an Electronic Health Record for documentation
  • Ability to work independently and utilize professional judgment to make decisions
