UPMC is Hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Acute Care 5300 Near Pittsburgh, PA

Are you interested in working at Magnet-designated UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital? Only 7% of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet designation - and we’re one of them! For more than a century, UPMC Magee has been caring for women through all stages of their lives, and we are looking for the next talented employee to join our team.

Acute Care 5300 is a 28-bed medical-surgical unit that cares for a wide variety of medical and post-op patients and serves as Magee’s stepdown unit. We see an extremely diverse patient population, with ages ranging from 15-100 . Many patients receive insulin and/or Cardezim drips, and all of the unit’s 28 beds are housed in private rooms, each hardwired for telemetry monitoring. Our post-op patients may be recovering from orthopedic, vascular, urological, gynecological, or bariatric surgeries; we also frequently receive overflow surgical patients who do not have beds available on their specialty unit. Due to the wide variety of services we offer and medical conditions we see, 5300 is a great fit for graduate nurses and nurses seeking to build broad knowledge and/or gain new experience.

What can you Expect as a Licensed Practical Nurse?

The LPN is prepared to function as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing and competency. The LPN participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place. An LPN shall obtain instruction and supervision if implementing new or unfamiliar nursing practices or procedures. An LPN shall follow the written, established policies and procedures of UPMC, UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and the State Practice Act. Acts within the LPN Practice guidelines (except IVs) and within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment.

An LPN shall communicate with a licensed professional nurse and the patients’ health care team members to seek guidance when:

  • The patients care needs exceed the licensed practical nursing scope of practice.
  • The patients care needs surpass the LPN’s knowledge, skill, or ability.
  • The patient’s condition deteriorates or there is a significant change in condition, the patient is not responding to therapy, the patient becomes unstable, or the patient needs immediate assistance.

The Licensed Practical Nurse is a valued step in the UPMC nursing career ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.

Note: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned this job. They are not exhaustive lists of all duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, abilities and working conditions associated with the job.
