Equipment Attendant - Allerton Park and Retreat Center

Job Summary
The Equipment Attendant assists in performing tasks directly related to the general and minor maintenance of equipment for Robert Allerton Park and its affiliated components including rental properties.
Duties & Responsibilities -
  • Maintains, makes minor repairs and adjust equipment used in the overall maintenance of the park grounds and buildings at Robert Allerton Park, such as tractors, mowing equipment, pruning equipment, over the road vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, snow removal equipment.
  • Maintains hand tools, power tools, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Maintains maintenance and service records on equipment.
  • Pick up equipment, tools and materials from vendors.
  • Organizes, cleans, and maintains maintenance shops and sheds and helps to keep organized inventory of materials and parts used in upkeep of the park.
  • Available for off shift emergency repairs and adjustment of equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
This position requires overtime and/or on-call hours as needed which may include evenings and weekends.

Position Qualifications -

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities -

  • Working knowledge of Park grounds, buildings, and utilities standards and the ability to develop extensive knowledge of physical plant standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public, Allerton team members and UI faculty, staff, and allied agency personnel and maintain a positive attitude in a client-focused environment.
  • Skill in dealing with the needs of clients while protecting University property and interests.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and individually for long periods of time.
  • Ability to progressively enforce pertinent administrative rules and regulations.
  • Ability to make detailed, concise reports.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle in inclement weather and the ability to operate various over-the-road vehicles.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity for extended periods of time, including but no limited to lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs., frequent bending at the back, and working at heights.
  • Ability to work year-round in an outdoor environment with the usual seasonal discomforts.
  • Ability to follow established procedures for the use in routine assignments, as well as non-routine items discovered during duties, for maximizing effectiveness.
  • Ability to handle routine duties and flex into a higher state of response based upon rapidly changing conditions and consultation with supervisor.
  • Ability to work additional hours and be available on-call as needed.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0510 - Equipment Attendant position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is $16.24/hour. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position as a condition of employment by campus policy. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
