The at UT Southwestern consists of nine divisions and administers a multidisciplinary program providing clinical care and educating residents and students. The department's vision is to be the preeminent academic Department of Surgery in the world. The mission for the Department of Surgery will deliver high-value surgical care in diverse clinical settings that serve the needs of the patients, academic mission, and community stakeholders. The department will develop innovative patient-centered research programs that will create new knowledge, while fostering the investigative skills of the faculty, trainees, and staff.

The in the Department of Surgery has an opening for a Research Assistant I to join the lab. The ideal candidate would perform functions that may include animal colony maintenance, designing and performing scientific experiments, analyzing, and interpreting results, following proper safety guidelines, and maintaining lab records/documentation. The Research Assistant I will work on ongoing scientific experiments which may include tissue culture, mouse handling or PCR genotyping. The candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The candidate also must be professional, responsible, organized and dedicated with strong interpersonal/team skill sets.

*Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or

*Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and one (1) year research experience at level of Research Technician or equivalent. or

*Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years research experience including two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent. or

*High school graduation or GED and six (6) years research experience to include two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent.

*Performs more difficult scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.

*Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus.

*Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers.

*Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication.

*Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation.

*Collects and organizes research data for project reports.

*May plan for, and provide working supervision to, the work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.

*Performs other duties as assigned.
