Job Summary

The Department of Microbiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center focuses on conducting basic and translational research in infectious diseases and training graduate students, medical students, physician scientists, and postdoctoral fellows. Our goals are to provide and continue to develop a rich environment of interdisciplinary research excellence within a highly collaborative atmosphere for faculty and students. As a valued member of our reproductive biology team, you will have the opportunity to help UT Southwestern with our mission to educate, discover, and heal and grow into advanced supervisor roles.

In this role, the candidate will perform: Computational analyses of bacterial and eukaryotic gene evolution (e.g. homolog detections, selective signatures); Bioinformatic analysis of various transcriptomic pipelines (RNA0Seg, scRNA-Seg, etc...); and Bioinformatic analysis of CRISPR screens for mammalian host gene targeting, and bioinformatic analysis of pooled bacterial fitness assays. Additionally, the candidate will perform bioinformatic analysis of RNA processing and transcription (e.g. rMATS, m6A-seq, ChIP-seq, CLIP-seq).

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with a coding language (Python, R, Perl, etc...)
  • Capacity to write one's own code to analyze large data
  • Highly clinical background Genomics/research background
Experience and Education
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, thesis work in bioinformatics and computational biology. OR
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, and two (2) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology. OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, and four (4) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Job Duties
  • Perform professional work in support of scientific research using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment.
  • Subject matter expert in multiple areas of computing technology, and specific knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
  • Manage computer hardware and software programming and maintenance for one or more research laboratories.Ensure existing systems meet the continuing needs of the labs and/or recommend and test new systems as necessary.
  • Perform or direct others to perform complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies and results. Manage assigned research projects with minimal input from the Principle Investigator.
  • Develop and/or modify software to support new and ongoing research projects.
  • Resolve hardware, software, and network issues in support of the laboratory.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
  • Prepare research reports for presentation and assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, network administration, or hardware/software maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
