The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician 2

WORK SCHEDULE

40 hours per week

REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares, packages and ensures that send out samples are forwarded to the appropriate reference lab for testing requested.

Maintains an awareness of and the ability to use the resources to provide instruction on the collection and processing of specialized and targeted tests that are not performed by UW Laboratory Medicine but must be sent to outside laboratories. These can be low volume tests or highly specialized and rare tests. This includes communicating specific collection instructions to the patient as needed.

Responsible for maintaining higher than average awareness of the chemicals and agents needed to preserve certain tests. These chemicals may include Acetic Acid, 6N HCL, 6N HNO, Boric Acid, and others. CLT2 is responsible for aiding other staff in the preparation of these collection containers as necessary.

Responsible for maintaining adequate stock of special collection materials needed for referral testing, including but not limited to un-expired stock of chemicals, agents and special collection kits needed for the preservation of send out tests from SCCA, UWMC and Roosevelt labs. These supplies include but are not limited to: Serotonin tubes, trace metal tubes, Somatostatin kits, TRH preservative tubes, Z-Tubes for Neurotensin, and Cambridge GI tubes for Neurokinin and Pancreastatin. Kits include Viracor, Osford, and Prometheus and any others as needed.

Build and maintain a working relationship with the referral laboratories as needed to facilitate the send out process. In addition to the Mayo Clinic, the primary reference lab that is utilized by Lab Medicine and Pathology, the CLT2 is responsible for sending specimens to all reference laboratories as needed and approved by the Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR).

Maintains and files reports and results in an organized and accessible manner.

Performs continual monitoring of lab reports and pending log monitors (PLM) to verify consistency of service and troubleshoot issues.

Maintains the required annual certifications needed for the shipment of hazardous materials and dry ice.

Trains and supports new and existing staff on the performance of reference laboratory send out activities and problem resolution.

Responds promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone and written inquiries about test information, results, and other related information.

Expected to solve problems triaged to them from the CLT1 group, providers, and other divisions in an efficient, timely, thorough and accurate manner, including the appropriate documentation in hc1.

Demonstrates the ability to problem solve to expedite processing of specimens that are received mislabeled, unlabeled, missing patient data, insufficient quantity, etc. and contact ordering locations as required. Thereby ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of these procedures, which are critical to patient care.

Provides constructive and valuable suggestions for improvement. Responsible for helping the general SPS staff maintain some awareness of the send out process and continually updating procedures.

Serves as a resource to general SPS staff with respect to the Lab Information System (LIS) and Clinical Information System (CIS).

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, work as a team member to provide maximum coverage and quality service in stressful and all situations.

Promotes and contributes to the development of teamwork within SPS and working relationships between SPS and other lab divisions. Including maintaining communication with the following groups to facilitate the collection, ordering, shipment, billing and resulting of referral send out testing: Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR), SPS Staff, Phlebotomy Staff, Providers, Clinical Administrative Support Team (CAST).

Expected to perform the duties of the CLT1 as needed and assigned.
