Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose
The VLRC Staff Attorney will work under the direct supervision of the Director, California Victims Legal Resource Center. The VLRC Staff Attorney will provide case management and direct legal representation to victims of crime in Sacramento and surrounding Counties. They will provide legal information and referrals to victims over the statewide 1-800-VICTIMS hotline, conduct legal research and writing on victims' rights related matters, and review law clerk research. The VLRC Staff Attorney will assist with creating VLRC publications and informational materials, assist with VLRC outreach, including: leading presentations to community groups and service providers, and representing the VLRC at outreach events, and assist in management of VLRC website.
Essential Functions
  • Provide direct legal representation to VLRC Legal Center clients, including representation in court and complete case management.
  • Research and develop educational materials on victim-related topics for printing and distribution.
  • Help monitor law clerks as they provide legal information through the 1800VICTIMS hotline and website chat function.
  • Supervise and mentor legal externs in their duties at the Center.
  • Assist in overseeing Technical Assistance Program.
  • Help coordinate, schedule, and lead statewide presentations to service providers and community groups.
  • Supervise student interns in the completion of research memoranda and other projects.
  • Represent the VLRC at various outreach events throughout California.
  • Facilitate VLRC Materials Requests orders statewide.
  • Assist Director in planning and updating the VLRC website.
  • Assist with coordination of statewide outreach campaigns.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited Law School.
  • Passed California Bar Exam and otherwise able to practice law in California.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of experience working with victims of crime or underserved communities.
  • Experience representing clients and using online case management system.
  • Ability to work with victims of all crimes in a culturally competent and trauma informed manner.
  • Strong public speaking skills and experience with presentations, workshops, and training programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Ability to clearly and simply communicate legal terms and procedures.
  • Strong team player; able to lead and educate those with less legal experience.
  • Detail oriented and able to multi-task.
  • Able to manage caseload in a well-organized manner.
  • Strong preference for bilingual- English and Spanish.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours. Forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and, on occasion, overtime as directed. May require some travel.
Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $66,560.00 - $83,799.30 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
