Brief Description of Duties
The Student Success Advisor of the University of the District of Columbia reports to the Assistance Vice President of Student Success or their designee (Director of the Student Success Center or Dean of Student Achievement) and is responsible for providing front-line customer service and timely and accurate advising to incoming and continuing students. The Student Success Advisor carries out day-to-day program related activities as well as strategic objectives and is committed to the overall success of all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide exemplary customer service to students offering support and direction as they navigate their experience at UDC.
  • Documents all student meetings and notes (Records recommended courses and conversations) in student information database.
  • Assists students with guidance in course selection process in keeping with the students’ majors, interests, values, and abilities.
  • Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures and presents educational information to new and continuing students
  • Adopts the Case Management model to optimize interactions and provides academic advising and other services to support student retention and success. In addition, providing data analytics and reports.
  • Develops programming and outreach activities related to student success initiatives.
  • Builds rapport and understanding of students that will furnish opportunities to support and guide students to post-secondary education. 
  • Engages with University stakeholders to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in advising, research and outreach.
  • Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors during the Early Alert process; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; records findings in appropriate database systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 

Other Duties

  • Work effectively and collaboratively with the Deans, and other faculty and staff to expand and solidify effective working relationships.
  • Provides links for students to complete the Exit and Student Success Plans surveys, at the end of advising sessions.

Minimum Job Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2-3) years of experience with emphasis on academic advising, student success, and retention.
  • Master’s degree preferred Education, Public Administration, Sociology, or related field.
  • Background in student support services preferred.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
