Essential Functions
The University of Texas at San Antonio's (UTSA) Office of Corporate and Foundation Engagement (CFE) seeks a corporate relations officer with experience establishing and sustaining long-term strategic relationships with industry. This position directly supports these activities for the School of Data Science, a cornerstone of UTSA's 10-year vision to drive workforce and knowledge development in the digital economy and serve as a magnet for industry partners. Additionally, the position includes a specific focus on entrepreneurial programs.
With strong leadership buy-in, the role will collaborate across the university on developing, supporting, and growing UTSA's data science and entrepreneurship programs. The Director will be joining a team focused on comprehensive corporate and start-up partnerships with engagements that include, but are not limited to, philanthropy, student engagement, sponsorship, research, venture creation, licensing, and grants.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Engagement, the Director of Corporate Engagement and Strategic Partnerships serves as a member of a team of seasoned professionals charged with leading the UTSA Corporate and Foundation Engagement Department. The Director will also jointly report to the Founding Director of the School of Data Science and will serve as a key member of the school's leadership team.
For the School of Data Science, the Director of Corporate Engagement and Strategic Partnerships develops the goals and strategies for developing strategic relationships with industry and other strategic partners. The Director cultivates connections with corporate partners and develops proposals aligned with the companies' needs for talent and interests in research.
For entrepreneurial programs, the Director of Corporate Engagement and Strategic Partnerships will provide service and leadership to the university community at large and external stakeholders, with a specific focus on entrepreneurship programs at UTSA. The Director serves as a strategic partner in developing, managing, and sustaining the university's relationship with external partners focused on entrepreneurship, including alumni, corporate venture groups, venture capital, and investment groups.
Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Work closely with the School of Data Science's Founding Director to establish and nurture new partnerships with tech-focused companies; secure introductory meetings with key external industry stakeholders and be a participant in those meetings; in collaboration with Development & Alumni Relations data analytics team, utilize UTSA's alumni/donor database (NXT) to maintain a prioritized list of prospective partners with special focus on opportunity value, pipeline management, and required action items; and lead/execute engagement and revenue generation strategies for key partners, both established and prospective.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for external partners focused on entrepreneurship, including alumni, corporate venture groups, venture capital, and investment groups; bring visibility to UTSA entrepreneurship by developing and moving partnerships with organizations interested in engaging, supporting, and investing in UTSA entrepreneurship programs, innovations, technology commercialization, and startups; lead the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes involving key faculty, deans, University, and senior administrators and staff involved in entrepreneurship and startups, as needed;
  • Manage a portfolio of external and internal stakeholders in UTSA programs as well as a targeted portfolio of technology companies; develop subject matter knowledge with assigned portfolio; structure technology and entrepreneurship program partnerships with external stakeholders that align with university, faculty, and industry needs, and UTSA policies and practices, through collaborative partnerships with University academic units and UTSA colleagues; maintain a current working knowledge and understanding of UTSA entrepreneurship, innovation, technology commercialization, and startups; develop faculty and student entrepreneurship opportunities through partnerships with external stakeholders and entrepreneurial ecosystem;
  • Develop briefings, talking points, and white papers and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and expertise regarding the state of data science and entrepreneurship at UTSA (e.g. a "startup pipeline report"); develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and staff, and represent UTSA's policies and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Five years of relevant entrepreneurship, startup, and innovation creation experience
  • Demonstrated success in entrepreneurship as evidenced by having successfully built and/or managed entrepreneurship programs
  • Startup team, or early venture stage team experience
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in science, technology, or engineering field
  • Similar experience in higher education or non-profit
  • Corporate/industry experience
Working Conditions
This position will be primarily located:
Hybrid-Regularly: This position will require working both remotely and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
Must be able to travel and work hours with a flexible schedule.
