University of Texas at Austin is Hiring an Assistant Professor of Musicology/Ethnomusicology Near Austin, TX

Description

Position Title: Assistant Professor of Musicology/Ethnomusicology

Position start date is August 2024.

Position: The division of Musicology/Ethnomusicology at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to hire a tenure-track scholar at the Assistant Professor level whose methodology is grounded in collaborative practices for community-engaged research, artistic citizenship, the creation and implementation of cultural policy, and/or public-facing scholarship. This position will be central to the Division's goal of building on its existing strengths to become a national leader in publicly engaged scholarship and collaborative methodologies. We are especially eager to recruit a colleague who wishes to collaborate across the College of Fine Arts or University. This position requires relocation to Austin, TX.

We seek a specialist in the musical traditions of Mexican, Mexican American, Tejano, or related communities represented in the US-Mexico border region. Experience in grant writing and public/private partnerships is desirable. This search is separate from our coterminous search for a non-tenure track, Assistant Professor of Practice to direct the Mariachi Paredes de Tejastitlan. However, this search welcomes expertise in mariachi among the potential genres of focus. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally prominent research profile, teach in our PhD and MM programs in Musicology and/or Ethnomusicology and our BM programs, mentor graduate students including DMA and MM music performance majors, and participate as an active citizen of the School of Music. Musicology/Ethnomusicology faculty in our school often lead ensembles, but are not required to. In addition, The University of Texas at Austin houses many interdisciplinary research centers and departments that may provide opportunities for cross-campus collaboration, such as the Center for Mexican American Studies, the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, the Center for Women's and Gender Studies, the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice, and Expanding Approaches to American Arts.

Demonstrated potential to produce nationally impactful scholarship in musicology and/or ethnomusicology with a focus in community-engaged research, artistic citizenship, cultural policy, and/or public-facing scholarship in music.

Preferred Qualifications: Expertise in the musical traditions of Mexican, Mexican American, Tejano, or related communities, including mariachi traditions. Demonstrated ability to tailor teaching and mentoring methods to meet the needs of higher education students from varying backgrounds. Experience in grant writing.
