May work non-traditional hours including some evenings, weekends and holidays. This job is not suitable for remote work and is expected to work regular on-site hours.

Learning Specialist II or Learning Specialist III may be hired based on experience, qualifications and candidate selected for the position.

Purpose

To serve as a Learning Specialist in Intercollegiate Athletics Student Services at the University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities

Designs and implements structured, evidence-based, individualized academic interventions for assigned student-athletes including instruction in areas of academic skill and strategy weakness.

Provides instruction in areas including reading comprehension, note taking, test taking, time management, study skills, concentration, memory, motivation, faculty interaction, classroom engagement, and other learning strategies.

Proactively seeks out student-athletes to provide assistance, resources and supplemental instruction in specific courses as needed.

Collaborates with Academic Coordinators for assigned teams to determine caseload and individual student need, evaluate course demands, and develop individualized learning and skill development plans within the established academic support structure.

Communicates frequently, effectively, and consistently with Student Services staff regarding both general and specific aspects of student-athlete academic progress, concerns or recommendations.

Administers and interprets academic screening of student-athletes for learning or attention needs. Communicate with students, academic staff, and coaches regarding the needs indicated by screening.

Creates individual Learning Profiles for all incoming undergraduate students using an existing template.

Assists student-athletes with Disability and Access registration and ongoing use of services.

Assists in ongoing hiring and training of Academic Tutors to share general study strategies and academic interventions. Provides oversight and direction for part-time staff outside of official trainings.

Collaborates with learning assistance partners across campus units, including the Sanger Learning Center and the University Writing Center.

Provides support to the Assistant Director, Learning Services in administering special projects and programs related to Learning Services.

Consistently exemplify the core values and quality service standards of Texas Athletics. Always act ethically. Proactively seek guidance when unsure or unclear of a law, rule or policy applicable to you or your department / sport program.

Actively participate in assigned education and training programs. Comply with all laws, policies, rules and regulations set forth by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System, The University of Texas at Austin, NCAA, Conference, or other governing body, including state and federal laws.

Annually obtain prior written approval and report all outside activities and outside income. Report knowledge of, or reasonable cause to believe, violation(s) of state or federal laws, policies, rules, or regulations of the University, Conference, or NCAA to IA ARMCS or IA HR.

Fully cooperate with any investigation by providing complete and accurate information when requested to do so by Texas Athletics and / or the NCAA and do not influence others in any way during an investigation.

In compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Texas Education Code Sec. 51.252, this position may be a Non-Confidential Employee as defined by University policies on Sex Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Interpersonal Violence and Stalking.

As a Non-Confidential Employee, individuals employed in this position will report incidents of such prohibited conduct to the University's Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Title IX Coordinator as required by applicable law or University policy.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree. At least one year of experience tutoring, teaching, or supporting student learning at the college level.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students requiring various levels of academic support, including high-need students.

Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to maintain sensitive, confidential, and comprehensive information. Familiarity with academic screening tools and diagnostic learning assessments.

Ability to work independently and to contribute positively to a team of professionals dedicated to the academic success of student-athletes.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

A combination of three years of experience tutoring, teaching, or supporting student learning at the college level. Experience working with NCAA student-athletes in an academic program.

Experience planning and conducting training sessions, workshops, or other structured activities for students and / or tutoring staff.

Experience interpreting education-impacting disabilitydocumentation. Knowledge of Canvas, Teamworks, Retain, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Workday platforms.

Knowledge of assistive learning technology. Prior experience with writing centers or writing programs.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence.

If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$50,000 depending on qualifications
