Accountant I

The University of Southern California's (USC's) Information Technology Services is seeking a talented Accountant I with an exceptional commitment to service excellence to join ITS Finance. As the Accountant, you will be an integral member of ITS Finance, collaborating with diverse and talented team members to help support the financial needs for multidimensional information technology initiatives and generate value for our campus stakeholders across a broad base of departments and constituencies.

The Accountant I role is an engaging and dynamic opportunity that involves a broad spectrum of responsibilities. You will be crucial in reviewing and processing requests and inquiries related to goods and services, as well as in reviewing, analyzing, summarizing, and reporting financial data. Supporting ITS Finance leadership with diverse projects, you'll play a key role in driving efficiency and innovation across the department. Additionally, you will offer essential support to ITS staff by addressing finance-related questions and troubleshooting errors. Collaborating closely with other members of the ITS Finance team, as well as with ITS staff, Accounts Payable, Procurement, and various other departments, you will contribute to a cooperative effort to manage all ITS-related financial matters effectively. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The candidate for the position of Accountant I must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of experience in accounting
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles including fund accounting

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate for the position of Accountant I meets the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Two years of experience in accounting equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of university financial systems plus a strong knowledge of computers and accounting applications
  • Knowledge of Workday and other financial systems
  • Excellent grasp of Microsoft products, particularly Excel
  • Knowledge of POs, requisitions, invoices, etc.

THE WORK YOU WILL DO

The Accountant I will be tasked with reviewing and processing requests and inquiries regarding goods and services, reviewing, analyzing, summarizing, and reporting financial information, supporting ITS Finance leadership with various projects across ITS, and providing help to ITS staff for finance related questions and errors faced that need troubleshooting. You will also be responsible for working alongside other ITS Finance team members, ITS staff, AP, Procurement, and other departments daily to work collaboratively on all ITS related matters.

The Accountant I:

  • Monitors, reviews and verifies accounting records and transactions for accuracy, timeliness and adequacy of supporting documentation. Ensures compliance with internal policies, agency rules and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Determines current financial balances to produce schedules, summary reports, trial balances, income statements, and/or other accounting and financial documents in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Prepares financial reports from available accounting data following prescribed formats, as needed. Reviews and analyzes reports for accuracy prior to distribution.
  • Identifies problems and interacts with internal and/or external contacts, as required, to correct deficiencies and/or discrepancies. Rejects and returns documentation as appropriate.
  • Reconciles accounts to the university financial system. Researches and resolves problems and adjusts accordingly. Ensures supporting documentation exists for audit purposes.
  • Serves as a resource for funding agencies and/or other organizations to provide requested or required financial information and reports. Clarifies or research issues as necessary.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining automated systems and procedures. Provides input for the development of accounting applications, reports, forms, records and documented procedures.
  • Advises on university financial policies and procedures, agency laws and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Maintains currency with laws and regulations governing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The hourly range for this position is $34.00 to $37.00 per hour.
